Could future firmware updates help it make better low-light and moving pictures, or is that a hardware limitation (i.e. buy now/hope, or just wait)?

There was an update that lets you specify the ISO setting and/or shutter speed. You'll need a tripod if the required shutter speed is too low, but this helps immensely with the grain you'd otherwise get. Two examples:

I haven't really had trouble with moving pictures when there is enough light.
