A marvelous book. For one thing, it's great meeting someone who has so fully assimilated into her very being, as it were, a beloved series of books and especially her favorite character. I have a similar relation with fantasy I've loved--let's hear it for Prydain!--and I am glad to encounter a kindred spirit. That said, I recommend this book to anyone who is a Snape fan and/or interested in spirituality. (If you can't stand religion, this book isn't for you, but if that's the way you feel you probably wouldn't pick it up in the first place.) Logospilgrim (who has a wonderful website, by the way) is a first-rate reader of the spiritual nuances of the Potter books, and particularly of Snape. As a literary critic, I am quite impressed by her many insights--especially since Snape is probably the most complex character I've ever met between the covers of a book (and as I've read quite a few, that ought to count for something).

I have not read the entire book as this is not a book I can truly understand in a single night of reading. I am reading this as a way to return to a path in which Christ walks beside me, not behind me.

With gentleness, kindness, and love, I am reminded of those lessons I had been taught since I was a child. There was a minister who taught us lessons from the life of Christ when we were children. He did not lecture, but had us sit at his feet as he told the stories of Jesus, his disciples, and all that the Son had done for us. For the first time ever, I learned that Jesus was a child, too, and it was this that brought me closer to him.

In reading these essays, I feel child-like again, only this time I am seated at Logospilgrim's feet as she reminds me that what I was taught as a child, still holds true now that I am an adult.

The reader is taken through the life of Professor Severus Snape following in the wake of the Quiet Professor's robes as she illustrates with gentle words what truth one might learn from an ex-Death Eater, a spy, a man who loved and was redeemed.

This will be a book I shall never let go, as it is a treasure.

The flawed master: lessons Professor Snape taught me is author logospilgrim's second collection of theological and mystical essays on Professor Severus Snape. Snape is, perhaps, the most complex character in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, and logospilgrim has much to say about his transformation from antagonist to hero in this second volume of her "Snape Trilogy." The flawed master is a follow-up to Bring forth the best robes: a spiritual understanding of Severus Snape, but it may stand alone as a volume of Christian spiritual wisdom, inspiration, and guidance for all Harry Potter fans, who, like logospilgrim and myself, read Rowling's seven-part series with an overwhelming desire to see the redemption of Professor Snape--a bitter and broken man who had renounced his allegiance to the Dark Lord and pledged his service to one who would defeat him, not by violence, but through love and self-sacrifice. Snape, the flawed master, was proud, angry, sarcastic, and sometimes cruel, and yet he rose above his many flaws to become Harry's secret protector and Dumbledore's most trusted accomplice. He was the spy whose bravery and self-sacrifice contributed to Harry's ultimate triumph over the evil Lord Voldemort. Logospilgrim's insightful essays are a balm to soothe our wounded hearts. If a man as flawed as Severus Snape can find redemption, then there is hope for us all, even the greatest of sinners. This is an inspiring book for those who seek the deeper meaning that is to be found in the Harry Potter series. The spiritual treasures within it are not merely lessons learned from a flawed master; they are the great moral truths of the Gospels, lessons taught by the One True Master, the one who was without sin, the one who died to redeem us all.

I was only a couple pages into this book before I started to feel like I was in the middle of a sermon at church. The purchase was made based upon the title and the description, without any access to the reviews, so I was unaware that this was a book about Christianity, as much as it is about Professor Snape. Had I known, I wouldn't have bought it.

I respect the author's right to analyze the subject matter as they wish, but the product description should make it clear that this is a text that is largely based upon a specific set of religious beliefs. As someone nonreligious, who appreciates Harry Potter in part BECAUSE the series is secular, it was just tremendously disappointing to have a bunch of Bible verses and talk about God and Jesus shoved down my throat, with no indication that this is what I should've expected based upon the summary.

I'm sure those who are interested in this sort of thing will enjoy it, but if the biblical perspective isn't your cup of tea, you might want to look elsewhere.
