We have had these bags for almost 3 years at this point (bought in 2010). We use them when we go food shopping for all sorts of produce, as well as nuts and other items from the bulk aisle. They are great for farmer's market's trips, too.
We use them to transport from store/market to home and then for carrying nuts around during the day for snacking.
They have been proven as very durable. There are no holes or rips in any of the bags.
We use other products for storing produce, which are specifically made for that purpose. (a commenter asked, so: we like Rubbermaid Produce Savers & Progressive Lettuce Keepers, depending on the item)
Our store has a scale in the aisle which creates a label. We print the label and then stick it onto the cord (on top of the other labels) - {another option would be to use an index card with previous trips' labels stuck on it, most recent on top, and binder- clipped to the bag/cord} - for scanning at the cashier. This way, it's easy for them to scan and we can remove it (cut labels off cord, or remove binder clip) for washing.
Another commenter asked about the weight, so I have updated my review with this info:
Using my
American Weigh ONYX Slim Design Kitchen Scale, 11-Pound by 0.1-Ounce, Black, I can report that one used produce bag (may be some onion flakes or nut casings in there) weighs 0.5 oz / 15g. If you add the labels (we have about 14 or so stacked on top of each other), it's about 0.8 oz, total.
Whenever possible, we would usually put the items on the scale without the bag, weigh them, print the label and then put the items in the bag and the label on the bag. When that's not possible, we put the empty bag on the scale, TARE it (sets it to 0) and then immediately put the items in the bag and weigh them. Remember to TARE it after you're done, in case there's no auto-reset on the scale.
These are great bags and much better (eco-friendlier and integrated cord, so no twisties) than using a new plastic bag (or reusing plastic roll-dispensed bags, which are difficult to wash/dry).
If I didn't have a mesh bag already for toiletries when I travel, or for small items when I go to the beach/pool, I would certainly use one of these. These bags would also be good for boat trips, to toss your smaller waterproof items in for easy, lightweight access.
In the future, however, I will probably choose an organic cotton bag for produce, as we are trying to reduce the amount of newly-purchased oil-based products in our home, whenever possible. This is not the fault of the bag, so, for what it is advertised to be, it gets 5 stars.
I rely on reviews here at Amazon to help me make informed buying choices. I hope this review has helped you in the same manner. If you voted this as helpful, I Thank You! :)
