I purchased an Acer Aspire Notebook for my girlfriend for Christmas, I also purchased a External CD/DVD drive. The Drive will play CD's but not DVD's. Is there something else I need to do, Maybe download a Driver or something? The notebook has the Windows 7 starter operating system.

Microsoft disabled DVD playing in Windows Media Player as an annoyance and attempt to get people to upgrade to a more costly version of Win 7. However, third party programs work fine and you can view DVDs using them. Any one should work, but my favorite is VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/), which is capable of viewing DVDs and lots of different video file formats (Quicktime, Real Media, WMV, AVI, etc....).

E. Liu is 100% correct. Windows 7 starter has DVD playback disabled in Windows Media Player. Take his advise and use VLC instead. Its free and works great! If you do decide later to upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium and you have 2 other PCs you want to upgrade - get the family pack that Microsoft has (3 PC license) In the Netbook you have the option to do the "Anytime Upgrade" You would select that option and then enter the key from the family pack. It works and I have seen it done (helping a friend in a similar situation as you).

Good luck!

So, If I get the VLC Player, Should I go ahead and Delete the Windows Media Player?

Well. Windows Media Player still plays audio files. I would just keep it.

You must have bought a netbook or a different Aspire. This particular Acer Aspire notebook (the 1410-2936) has Windows 7 Premium and plays DVDs perfectly with an external DVD Drive.

Am not very tech but am trying to decide between a acer 1810t 8638 and asus eee 1201n. Main use is for HD movies, web--no games. asus is $200 less. Is it worth the extra $? Would really appreciate your expertise.
