Best series? Ultima, it has some duds like 5, 8, and the technical glitches of 9 but 3, 4, 6 and 7 make up for it.

Best story? FF7, just too many awesome characters and twists

Best overall? BG2+ its expansion, greatest RPG experience so far.

Love Mass Effect but for some insane reason I dont see it as an RPG. I know that it is, but I cant wrap my mind around it...too old I guess. Baulder's Gate was a very good RPG, and I enjoyed NWN even with the problems that it had. All time favorite though would HAVE to be KOTOR 1 and 2. Awesome story, great immersive gameplay, characters you cared about (whether or not you went light or dark side) and alot of replayability =D

KOTOR 1. 2 was good as well, but not as good as 1. I wish they would make a 3 that wasn't an MMORPG. Aside from that, I am really enjoying the Kingdoms of Amalur game. I really enjoy Bethesda made games. They are incredible. I also enjoyed Titan Quest very much.

Wow, only one small mention of Legend of Dragoon and the 'Tales' games saddens me so much.

Legend of Dragoon (PS1) was so amazing; the music, the graphics, the fighting-system, the was the first game to ever make me cry...Lavitz you will FOREVER be my favorite RPG character of all time...

A couple of 'Tales' games are a close second. Tales of Symphonia (Gamecube) was a minimum of 60 hours to beat (supposedly) and I played it 8 times and I would play it again if I still had a Gamecube. Tales of Vesperia (Xbox360) came later down the line, but still kept true to the 'Tales' series (even though the story in it wasn't as dynamic). 'Tales' games are so whimsical and mesmerizing, and they are some of the only RPG's I have ever played where 4 people can play at the same time (that isn't on the PC).

LoD was awesome. I remember showing it to a friend and he laughed at the characters like Rose saying "More and More" when you did an addition. Then he played the game and loves the hell out of it.

I loved MEII, but I really think Skyrim (on PC) is one of the greatest games (not just RPG's) of all time. I also liked the latest Deus Ex, but, as people have stated about MEII, it might be considered a shooter. If you are still looking for more because you have played all these try the Fallout series for sure... also the first few Splinter Cell series (this is more of a shooter also).

The first RPG I ever played was the PS2 game: Legend of Dragoon, and was the best RPG I've ever played. My 2nd favorite would definitely have to be the Mass Effect trilogy. I am stoked for the 3rd installment in the series. CAN'T WAIT.

3 games I'll happily buy and play again and again in order of how much work they take to really get into:
Mass Effect 2 (yay they finally updated a lot of the stupid things in RPGs), Chrono Trigger (amazes me how well this has aged+how many great ideas have not been reused/stolen from it), baldur's gate 2 (It's long, hard, and huge, but what it lacks in presentation it makes up for in depth:story, character customization, and not to mention no game comes close to the uniqueness of the items).

Also I'm very upset that "leveling" still exists, much less its in FPS games now? Like the system was made in the 1980's when DnD came out...there are things called updates and innovation!

I'm surprised no one has mentioned two of my all time favorite RPG's; Super Marior RPG, and Secret of Evermore. Those two, along with Chrono Trigger, are by far the best RPG's I've played (IMO).

Can't believe no1 has mentioned the Suikoden series. Another classic is Secret of Mana.

Like others, I also like FFIV, VI, VII, IX. Zelda: A Link to the Past & Ocarina of Time were great. Kingdom Hearts series was also surprisingly fun.

Agreed! Also the same company that made Fallout 3 and Fallout 3 New Vegas (Bethesda that is) also made some other excellent RPG's i.e. The Elder Scrolls series of games (Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim) All great games.
