When I was younger.. perhaps the Zelda franchise. In the past few years, it was Mass Effect... but that is now dethroned by the Witcher franchise.

Wow. Zelda is NOT an RPG (the second one is sort of an Action RPG, but the games otherwise contain zero RPG elements).

I think Fallout 2 and Planescape Torment are my favorite traditional RPGs. Final Fantasy VI is my favorite JRPG, Shining Force 2 my favorite SRPG, and Deus Ex my favorite action RPG.

Skies of Arcadia for the Sega Dreamcast and later the Gamecube was, and always will be my favorite RPG. Great characters, awesome world and setting, and good story.

Mass Effect Series. In addition to awesome gameplay, the story and the attention to detail amaze me. Plus I really like that throughout the whole series, you really only know what Shepard knows, which brings you closer to the story.

For me, Final Fantasy 7 is the best RPG in the world. But the series has let me down time and time again in recent years. Maybe I should give star ocean a try

My overall favorite RPGs is a tie between two games and I cannot pick one over the other. They are Chrono Trigger, and Chrono Cross. I adore those games. I love the stories, though they were confusing to me, and the battle systems were unique. I loved the time traveling mechanic in Trigger, and how you could have an actual effect on the world by doing certain things in the past to change the present, and in Cross I loved the parallel worlds and how you could take one character from one world and introduce them to their alternate version in the other. Oh, and do I even need to mention the fantastic soundtracks to these games? It's been years since I've played them but I remember them fondly and still get giddy sometimes thinking about them. Amazing games period.

Robert Kiehn says:
Play it on the Xbox 360 or get a patch or upgrade your PC (if you play it on a PC, that is) to stop it from freezing up. Also, if you play it on the Xbox 360, you might need to get a new one as well.

Xenogears. If there was ever a game that needed a sequel(s) this is it. Loved the gear battles.

Summoner! Someone has to rep Summoner... Oh lordy, that game was brilliant. The music in particular was incredible, and I feel it was way ahead of its time graphically. The first game in which I experienced three-dimensional environments of that scale. I probably sunk 500 hours into that game.

And of course, Diablo II. I loved the Lord of Destruction expansion and everything, but there was a purity to Diablo II that was somehow lost once expanded. Very fond memories of LAN parties in high school playing Diablo and Diablo II.

HO HO! And NetHack! almost forgot. That one still gets me even today. I've got a samurai with a pet cat somewhere on my laptop right now.

Probably Legend of Dragoon for the PS1...just something about it. And it was the first JRPG I played that had an extra "real time" button timing dynamic to the battle system.
