SFIV is meant to be pretty hard for non beat-em-up regulars to get in to, but the general concencus is that Soul Calibur 5 is much easier for casuals, but the depth is there as you get better.......

i always thought i was ok at tekken 3 back in the day - it was pretty approachable, and then on the gamecube i had SC2 with link as the nintendo bonus character, and i thought that game was epic. incredibly pretty and the best beat-em-up i've played.

but now on ps3 the one that entices me the most is the recent mortal kombat game - how is that for a casual beat-em-up player? are we talking closer to Soul Calibur playability or is it more hardcore Street Fighter style??

cheers for any help :)

Its easy enough to pick up for casual players. It's in a 2d plane like street fighter, but is paced a bit slower (not a bad thing imo as it is very smooth). Combos are short and fairly easy to perform. The idea is really to link combos and special moves. Special moves are way fun but easy to abuse and overuse. There are finishing fatality moves and the game is extremely violent and gory. Overall I really like it. I'd say get MK as it is my favorite next to SC2 and 4.

Most current gen fighters are pretty complex and no matter what you choose you're going to get dominated online. If you just want to knock around casually you can always turn down the difficulty and play single-player, they're all pretty approachable in that respect.

My favorite current gen fighter is Super Street Fighter IV. I too am terrible online but I enjoy playing single player causally and its also the most recognizable brand so when friends come over they're at least somewhat familiar with it even if the last Street Fighter they played was SFII in on old 90's arcade. Also, if you liked Tekken 3, there's always Tekken 6 and I always found Soul Calibur to be on the same level as Tekken so can't go wrong there either, although I never played SC5.

Fighting games and "beat'em ups" are not the same thing. What a misleading, and disappointing, thread name.

SFIV and Tekken?
They're not beat-em-ups.
