Well, that depends. If you want your games on your Xbox 360 or PS3 to output in 720p(High definition) or 1080p(Ultra High Definition), then yes, you have to have an HDTV.
Now, if you have a ps3 and you are talking about these "classics HD" collections(ie: Sly Collection, God of War Collection, etc.) then it is the same thing as the above sentence. You do not require an HDTV to play these games, but if you want to play them in 720p or higher, then get an HDTV.

1080i compat tv's(many are heavy, big, florr models but have a decent picture just not nearly as good as the p) will be ok as far as picture,
but "true hd " is by way of 720 and 1080 p..
and even then it depends on the refreshment rate etc to actually have a set which will give a "true high def exp"

but if you have a tv which is using older tech but can use high sef via vga (no hdmi) slot then the pic will not be that that bad, just will if you put it directly next to a brand new vierra for example..
some games are 720, even if you have the best tv out there it will display the game in 720.. and this is usually due to the games size, framrate problems @ any higher setting then 720 and so on..

yes i strayed off subject but just in case you are planning on buying a new set.. panasonic vierra plasma are best bang for the buck, the higher model you get the better blah blah, but if you go on craigslist or ebay you can find a used 50 inch 1080p vierra (2 years old) for under 400 easily and its a great tv... cant go wrong with new/used samsung plasma also, but make sure its 1080p ready/capable

Most new games are built for use on an HD tv. Some are even widescreen and when played on a regular tv it wont fill the screen also the on screen info will be smaller if the game is designed for widescreen. Not all games do this though.
