I'm trying to find some new music to listen that isn't the popular, mainstream Indie genre (ie. Foster The People, Breathe Carolina, ect.) which seems to be the big thing right now. I'm pretty open when it comes to music, I listen to a variety of stuff but I really like alternative rock, metal and grunge style. I'm just interested in hearing about some new groups that actually have unique talent and individuality. I'd appreciate any feedback! :)

These folks are a bit quieter than what you may be looking for, but here goes:
http://rotaryten.bandcamp.com/
I discovered them last week and my goodness, they're fantastic. Their second album is a pay-what-you want.

A bit of classic rock-ish stuff:
americandrag.bandcamp.com
Once again, a pay-what-you-want deal.
I particularly recommend "Out of the Sky".

Also, let's not forget Snowmine:

If you're inerested in hearing about new groups with talent and individuality, look no further than The New Pornographers or The Mural And The Mint.

The New Pornos have paid albums, but I wholeheartedly recommend "Twin Cinema" or their newest one, "Together".

The Mural and The Mint are much like the Pornos in that they've also got wonderful harmonies and are very stylized. Their stuff can be found for free on their website:

I hope this is what you're looking for!

Thanks, I'd never heard of them before but they sounded pretty good. Not sure what you think but they kinda reminded me of Switchfoot or Trapt.

I would highly recommend The Mars Volta or if your into a little more of the punk stuff At the Drive-In. Granted they both have big followings and could be considered popular but they are definitely unique and a breath of fresh air.

If you're into hooks and harmonies, but a bit off center (ala XTC ) look into Field Music. Great stuff and a brand new album soon to break. Also a group from Canada called 'Mother Mother' have three very quirky releases. And if you're a bit more adventurous, there's an ambitious Sufjan Stevens album called The Age of ADZ that's really impressive.

Since you like alternative rock, I'll recommend my favourite visual kei band, BUCK-TICK. They're one of the most popular bands in Japan, but almost no one has heard of them in North America because they rarely tour outside of their own country, if ever. Here's the first YouTube video I ever saw of them, and it was love at first listen:

Hope you find some great new tunes in your search! :)

Check out Low-Fi or Youth Lagoon. They take a little getting used to but they are unique in their own way.
