I'm probably going to have to give it to either Muse or Animal Collective.

Now I'm curious who Pitchfork and/or the Village Voice Pazz & Jop critics picked as the best of the Aughts -- does anyone know?

Here's Pitchfork's Top 20 albums (and 200) of the decade, with Radiohead and Arcade Fire at #1 and #2:

1) MUSE
2) Coldplay
3) Travis
4) Death Cab For Cutie

Additionally, bands that had a good run on the 90's and have had quality music the past decade or so, include:
1) Dishwalla/J.R. Richards
2) Collective Soul
3) Vertical Horizon
4) Foo Fighters

How about Band of Horses?

L. King says:
A case could be made for Brian Jonestown Massacre. Sure, they released more records in the 1990s, but the 4 new studio albums, plus the live albums and compilations, released after 2001 are excellent, especially the most recent, "Who Killed Sgt. Pepper." And most listeners didn't run into BJM until 2004, when, to capitalize on the movie "Dig!" the band released the "Tepid Peppermint Wonderland" retrospective.

Otherwise, I'd go with the White Stripes, Muse, or Beck, all consistently great throughout the decade, all consistently innovative. And an honorable mention for OutKast, who, though not "alternative" anything, attracted a surprising number of rock fans.
