As my first attempt to use the Amazon Appstore, I am trying to download the free app of the day (Angry Birds Rovio). It appears I cannot download the app unless I provide Amazon with credit card information. If this is a free app, why does Amazon require credit card information?

Amazon wants to make it easy for you to buy apps from them and for them to make money off of you. If you don't give them your credit card info, then you can't buy paid apps, and if you can't buy paid apps, then Amazon can't make money off of you. It's a trade off. You get the features of the amazon store, such as a free paid app every day, but you have to give them something in return.

Its also why they dont have a search function that eliminates all paid apps from your search. :-P

If you sign up with a bank they give you a gift. They used to give out free toasters for some reason. If you sign up with Amazon, you get a gift: free apps. If you don't sign up then you don't get a gift.

why are you letting me sign in and then give you all my card details to find that it only for the US and why is it only for the US, I go on the market on my phone and half it is asian of some sort

Because Amazon hasn't yet worked out the details of the international sales. This is often the case with new offerings from Amazon. Kindle was US only for more than a year. Google's Android Market is already international, but in the US it's hardly the case that HALF is asian. You run across the occasional app in one asian language or another, but it's less than 1% of the gigantic Android Market.

Well what's strange for me is, It was letting me have the free apps, and all of a sudden, it wants a credit card.
my case is a little different. I had a card on file from a purchase years ago. That card expired a year ago, but I was still getting free apps. it's like they finally realized my card was expired, and now won't let me have any.
pfft. I'll probably use the "gift card" trick.
If you have one of those visa (or whomever) gift cards laying around, that are pre-paid credit cards, then you can use it, even if it's empty. I think I have one that someone gave me, that still had a buck on it. I might dig it out and put it in.

It's for record keeping. Without a payment method on file, the app will be considered as a donation and not a sale. To us, it doesn't look any different but to the IRS and stock holders, it matters.

Suddenly, I can't download free apps from Amazon. No problems before. They have my credit card info. Why the sudden problem? Should I just delete the app? I can find much of what I want in the Marketplace......

So today I learned that you can't even use the apps unless you are logged in to Amazon Store. This is getting stupid

I have tried for hours to down load both free and pay applications. From reading this I may be blocked because my 50 dollar gift card is under a slightly different email address. In all my attempts there was no mention of this. If this is the case please let me know.
Next how do i get my money back? This is not worth my time. The 50 dollar card is under allen.e.davis@saic.com.
My home email is allen.eugene.davis@gmail.com
If I can't get my money back please tell me how to make this work well enough to spend what I put in.
Please consider how easy it is to get files from other sources. This is almost like dealing with Apple. I purchased an android for that reason.
Thanks for any help.

On my android I can play a game, but it gives me the option to upgrade meaning I'd have to pay some thing for the game itself. This is a new learning curve for me also. I'm getting used to it tho, but it takes time to learn all this. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay

Exactly, the market is only for the US. Had I known this I would have bought another tablet, not the kindle fire. It is ridiculous not to be able to buy once you are out of the US.

If you have a friend in the States use their address as yours. Also, have them purchase a prepaid gift card from a U.S. bank on your behalf. Enter that info in your payment settings and you're good to go. Regardless of where you are you will be able to get apps.

I am in Canada but have a U.S. mailing address and a U.S. credit card. I have had no issues downloading and purchasing apps for my Kindle Fire.

I bought the kindle especially for bible reading. Amazon has blocked the free YouVersion app from the market place so that it can only be downloaded from their store. Im am going to returning my kindle because of the payment requirement and will get something else.

What do I do if I want to use Amazon Cloud Player because I got a small $2.00 from an app, but every time I go to Amazon Cloud player it asks for a credit card before I can continue.. I don't have a credit card because I am 14.

This practice seems to be faulty. I've made a number of purchases with my gift card balance and no credit card was used nor asked for. Then, randomly, there is an issue, but still Amazon does not ask for a credit card directly. I had an interesting experience with their overseas callcenter (the rep just had to narrate every thing she was doing... twice. And she had quite the attitude.) where the operator wanted my credit card number over the phone. OH HELL NO.

There is probably a legit policy here somewhere but currently they must be embarrassed to let anyone know about it at the time of sale. Quite silly Amazon.

You do not need a credit card to buy freebies. You DO however need to turn on one-click and give amazon a billing address
