I recently purchased an HD movie on VOD for the first time. I was happy to see that the audio was available in 5.1 surround. To my surprise the sound was only in stereo. Has this happened to anyone else?

Same issue here. I have watch several 5.1 movies and it's stereo only. Luckily these were all free Prime movies. I will not purchase any 5.1 titles until this is addressed.

I purchased Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol from Amazon Instant Video and it had a HD banner around the movie, however only got stereo and no 5.1 and I'm running through a PS3 with HDMI.

Same issues here. I purchased a series and it's been super annoying not having dialog through the center channel. First world problems for sure.

All the same, between the poor hd streaming quality and sound issues this will be the last thing I buy here till it's fixed....if something better hasn't come along in the mean time.

Yeah, so what the f? i just got Breaking Bad season 4. 20 bucks. And now i get to hear it in f'ing stereo? That will be my last video purchase from amazon and I will be cancelling my prime trial before it charges me the 80 bucks.

I've only tried one 5.1 title via instant video but I also got only stereo sound. Streamed to a PS3. Get 5.1 just fine from Netflix and Blu-ray disks.

Amazon???? Come on... Your instant video service is worthless for HD as most people who purchase an HD TV also have a 5.1 surround sound speaker setup. I do not have 5.1 for The Avengers HD.

I had the same problem with streaming Pacific on my PS3. I fixed the issue by going into the ps3 sound setting and checking all audio codecs.

Same here.
I have purchased 2 HD movies so far. Although both movies state 5.1 surround through compatiable devices (which my XBOX360 qualifies as), I am only able to achieve stereo. I have adjusted several setting through my receiver (thinking it might be me setup), but 5.1 cannot be achieved. As stated thoughout several posts on this page, Netflix & other services (e.g. Micrsoft Zune) is able to achieve 5.1 surround with no issues.
Amazon has been "spot on" with everything it has to offer thus far. But this annoyance needs to be resolved.

same here...netflix and BD all give me DD quality sound but Amazon Instant shows HD quality pic but only a pcm stream to my receiver. Very annoying when trying to watch movies and expecting 5.1.

What do we do about it? Does amazon moderate these posts or are we just preaching to the choir?

I doubt they monitor this. Even asking tech support directly would probably result in them trying to troubleshoot the problem on the users end.

Yeah, I don't know. I haven't had the time or willpower to try to call them about it.

i sent support an email and their answer is to go into sound settings; audio output; choose HDMI (in my case); choose Manual; uncheck all boxes except thise labeled Dolby. It works !!!..i was able to get 5.1 sound when watching an amazon video.

This is not a sure fix. This will definitley have your RX display that its getting a Digital signal but it does not mean the outcome will be 5.1. My friend tried this a while back and thought he had found the fix. He called me over and pointed out that it was working. I got him to get up and go stand at his center channel.. no sound. I have tested it on several, Full Metal Jacket being one, and it is a digital signal but still only stereo.
