I have a 60's thread in the music forum and lately we've taken to talking baseball practically everyday.

Sooo, I thought why not start a thread where we could talk *all things baseball*.

This weekend I will be attending a Baseball Symposium at The Library Of Congress, I'm quite excited about it and I'm going to need a place to share my thoughts and enthusiasm.

Here's the schedule of events:

http://www.loc.gov/folklife/Symposia/Baseball/program.html#symposium

So sit down in one of our many warm ( internally heated) comfortable leather Lazy-Boy recliners and make yourselves at home.

We have your favorite beer on tap with free snacks and appetizers.

Let's just talk baseball!!!!

Hi Darren,

re: Okay what is the first topic, because I could talk all day on this subject.

I'm basically providing the place, beer, snacks and appetizers. I started this thread for my good friends on my 60's music thread who happen to love baseball too.

You are welcome to chose the first topic of discussion, if you like.
Think of this as your friendly neighborhood Sports Bar, drop in anytime or day. :-)

Now someone mentioned the Red Sox man they have kind of backpedaled into the playoffs this year, but heck they could go and win the World Series, you just never know. I am a Yankee fan so hold it against me if you must.

Darren,

re: stevign

He's a major cut-up friend from another thread. Pay no attention to him.

re: I am a Yankee fan so hold it against me if you must.

I'm a *huge* Yankee's fan so this could be the start of a good freindship. :-).

I'm leaving work soon but I will chime in when I get home. I plan to do a 3 mile trek, I live in DC and the evening is perfect for walking past the National Monuments and The Smithsonian Museums.

Darren, have you decided what topic you want to start with?

BBL,
Althea

PS: Just checked out your profile and "Shoeless Joe" is one of my favorite books too. It's been years since I first read it, I think it's time to read it again. Trouble is I let someone borrow it and never saw it again, I'll get another copy here on Amazon.

AP, Darren, Stevign, I'm not a Yankee fan. I root for 2 teams, the Mets, and whoever is playing the Yankees.

Okay we can start off with a question would you have three years taken off your life if you could have been a star for one year on your favorite baseball team?

My answer would yes. It would also give me some great material to write about I would guess.

Darren:

Would it be the last 3 years of my life when I'm bald, no teeth, deaf, almost blind, can hardly walk, on oxygen, livin' in a cardboard box, pushin' a broken shopping cart, a case of the gout, palsey in both hands, no money for Viagra and prostate problems?

Can I think it over?

In reply to an earlier post on Oct 1, 2009 4:52:08 PM PDT
stevign says:
Ok, I thought it over..........why not, I could go back to pitching. It would have to be with the Yankees though, I wanna be on the same side as AP when she empties the dugout and kicks butt, she's got a helluva right-cross. Plus I wanna see if she throws like a girl.

Seriously though, I find TV baseball boring to watch but I really loved playing the game. I don't know Kevin Costner's "For Love of the Game" bombed, I thought it was down to earth and very well done.

I personally would love to play third base for the Yankees, but I was always all glove and no stick. I know I would have chills just trotting out on the field at Yankee Stadium. It would have meant more at the old place, but it would still be a dream come true.

Willie Mays was always my favorite player. I wanted to play centerfield like him. I had some sucess as a softball player. I wasn't much of a hitter, but loved playing the outfield. I'd rather make a good catch, then get a hit. I went to the first Mets dream camp in 1985, and got to meet and play against my idols, the 1969 Mets. Sitting at the bar, and drinking with Ron Swoboda, Cleon Jones, and Bud Harrelson. I was in Baseball heaven.

re: what you give one year of your Life

I sure would. I grew up in Mt Vernon, NY a stone's throw away from Da' Bronx. I was actually born in the Bronx. In the early 60's my passion was to Pitch in Yankee Stadium (it still is) and Sing at MSG. I'm 57, that has never happened. The Closest I got to Pitch at Yankee Stadium was in a parking lot, near the Bat playing Whiffle Ball. And the closest I got to singing at MSG was a Benefit concert my Band did in the 70's at Yonkers Raceway.
I lived and Breathe baseball in the 60's. I am Lefty and Had a real good arm. But back then, managers of Little League teams had one thing on their mind WIN at any cost. I pitched almost every 2 or 3 days. By the time I was 16, I couldn't raise my left arm any more to pitch. that was 1968. I have followed the Yankees since 1958 and have never looked back. There were many, many lean years. From 65 to 75 and from 82 to 95. This Generation doesn't know how it was being a Yankee Fan back in the day. They only know Winning. They always here about Mantle, DiMaggio, Ruth,Gerhig,Berra, Rizzuto, Jackson and Munson and they never her about Horace Clarke, Roger Repoz, Mike Kekich, Johnny Callison, JaKe Gibbs, Gene Michael, Steve Balboni. You get my point. Anyway, I love them, I always will and if they don't win this year, so what. I have had 51 years of ups and downs with them and I have enjoyed just about every minute of it. The only killer was 2004, being up 3-0. I was there at the Stadium when John Damon hit that Grand Slam in the 2nd inning. I left the Stadium right after that hit, I knew it was over.
