This was the opening large-scale ground campaign for the US military in the early months of WW II, not to disrespect our beloved US Marines and bluejackets on Wake, Guam, and in northern China. I am one of the children of a surviving soldier of the 12,000 Philippine Scouts of the U.S. Army (the enlisted were native Filipinos and were non-U.S. citizens; most of their officers were Americans, and many of them were West Point graduates) who defended the U.S. commonwealth of the Philippine Islands from Dec. 1942 to May 1942. They did so alongside: about 14,000 U.S. Army soldiers and Army Air Corps personnel, US Marines and Naval personnel, and National Guardsmen; at least 50,000 Philippine Army troops; and dozens of brave American and Filipina nurses of the U.S. Army and Navy Nurse Corps. These Fil-American forces were under-equipped, under-fed, fighting without air support, and effectively cut off from reinforcements from the United States. Nonetheless, they collectively held the heretofore-triumphant Japanese military machine at bay for 150 days, probably saving Australia and Hawaii from Japanese conquest. As the Battling Bastards (and the Battling Belles) of Bataan said back then: "No Mama, No Papa, No Uncle Sam, No Uncles, No Nieces, No Artillery Pieces, and Nobody gives a Damn!" Now these soldiers were real warriors! HUAH!
