After six months of reading like mad and debating the relative merits of easily a few thousand titles, the Amazon Books team editors have hammered out lists of our favorite books released so far this year: an overall top 20, plus top 10 picks in more than a dozen categories.

You can see them at http://www.amazon.com/bestbookssofar. We'd appreciate hearing what you think of our picks-what you loved, too, which incredible 2012 releases we may have overlooked, and what you're most looking forward to reading in the second half of the year.

Wow... self-promotion is not very attractive on you.

In reply to an earlier post on Jun 26, 2012 6:04:22 PM PDT
I'm sorry you feel that way. When one signs on with Amazon.com in a way that is what is happening.
I spent 10 years of my life doing this book, and my brother was one of those who served 14 years in the USAFSS serving his country against communism - right next to the Iron Curtain. He became very ill due to the job he had done in those 14 years, the KGB got ahold of him and he was never the same again. I loved him dearly, he raised me for 10 years of my life, and he is my first hero. See if you find these statements attractive enough for you, and why one has to promote their own books - everyone does it - even the popular authors. How on earth do you think that books get sold. We hold book-signings, etc., and give speeches. Is that so unattractive?
If you give me your name and address I will be happy to send a copy of this book for your own review and enjoyment.

J. Mercado says:
I wouldn't doubt that you, the author, would think yours is one of the "best books of the year so far" as this thread is titled. However, you should allow one of your readers to select your book for this thread. Otherwise, it's not the real thing. Self-promotion has its place - perhaps in other forum threads - but not on this one. And thank you for the offer but I have way too many books to get to already. Best of luck.

I think your list of teen books is right on target. I've read and really loved most of them, but the John Green, Rachel Hartman and Leigh Bardugo titles are particular shining stars.

The Marenon Chronicles, for Fantasy genre, is excellent. Jason D. Morrow, a young writer, is exceptional in the world of Marenon he has built. His characters become close friends after the first few chapters. This is a terrific trilogy, especially for a new author.

Trish (if I may call you by your first name), I for one am very glad you posted about your book. It is probably one that I would never have known about without your posting, and both my husband and I (and I'm sure more than a few of his friends) would be very interested in this topic. I will be ordering a copy today. Regarding the rather 'snarky' comments made about self-promotion - it seems to me that you believe strongly in your book and put heart and soul into it for those you cared about. So, don't worry about individuals who seem to have a jaded attitude towards those they've never met.

I agree with you Mercado. The manic notes posted by Schiesser imploring everyone to read this book is a big turn-off.

Diana Gabledon - "Outlander" Series. Eight historically based novels and each one a masterpiece. My husband and I read the series together (I stayed one book ahead of him and kept him begging for more) and what an incredible journey! Gabledon's uncanney ability will pull you in, to the point of being able to smell, taste and touch her characters. The series touched our lives and our marriage in a very real and powerful way. A love story NOT for the light-hearted, Jamie and Claire (main characters) are strong, powerful; yet fragile, gentle, complex lovers whose love will take your breath away again and again and again. Approx. 10,000 pages of WOW!!!
