There have been several posts on this forum that suggest Best Buy is in trouble an might be downsizing or going away? What is this about and what is the evidence for that?

Well, their CEO recently stepped down, and they announced last week that they are closing 50 stores. I think they will be around for a while longer, but they are certainly not moving in the right direction.

Best Buy has done some things right: their website now offers free shipping on all movies, which makes them much more competitive with Amazon's online business.

As much of an Amazon fan as I am, I would hate to see Best Buy go out of business. I like walking into a physical store sometimes, and Best Buy is the last store around me that specializes in electronics. Also, Amazon's often matches Best Buy's sale prices - so if the competition goes away, Amazon has less incentive to keep prices low.

Firstly, ..... wait JMM said that.

Ok, next...... errr JMM said that too.

Most importantly..... well JMM covered that.

There is one thing JMM didn't say..... Nice job, JMM! ;)

I wasn't a Circuit City shopper, but I was sad to see them go a couple years ago. Consumer electronics stores don't seem to be long lasting businesses in general.

ha ha. thats so true. every time i walk into bestbuy, they almost make it hard for me to purchase from them. when I'm looking for some help, no one is around, and when I'm not looking for it, at least three of their representatives keep smothering me. they constantly run out of movies i wanna buy, although their website shows them in stock. they do everything in their power NOT TO price match the competitor. even though it is their policy to match (I spent 30 minutes to pricematch a FRY's product) their customer service is a simple joke.

I dont want them to go out, but compared to Amazon, they are a simple hassle to deal with. most times their representatives really act out, and give me hard time as if they indeed want to go under. I sure as hell use their grounds as a showroom myself.

C. Barbus,

Thanks! :-)

I didn't like Circuit City much, but I was surprised when they went out of business. They used to have a good sale every once and a while.

If Best Buy goes, it will have a much bigger impact on me. A large majority of my movie purchases are either from Best Buy or Amazon.

Also, it always sad when people lose their jobs. One of the store closing is close to me, and I hope they relocate the staff to the two other nearby stores. I've heard a lot about Best Buy's employees being incompetent, but everyone I've encountered at my local stores have been pretty knowledgeable, or at the very least friendly.

For once I have to agree with Oskar. I have a Best Buy down the street from me and I often go there to see in person products that I am contemplating buying here from Amazon. Except for a few Best Buy exclusives or when I absolutely don't want to wait for an item I don't buy anything at Best Buy. I can always get the same item cheaper through Amazon. Also with big items such as a TV Amazon's "white glove" home delivery is excellent.

Some of the employees are okay... others are just really incompetent. I remember one time I went to my local best buy and magnolia to see some of the DLP sets from Mitsubishi and one of the reps decided to start pestering me. He literally argues with me for 30mins over why his LCD at home is better than any DLP and that I should just buy the same LCD (Dynex... lol) that he has at home.

During which, I explained to him I already had a Dynex I was looking to chuck out of a moving car since it had such a lousy picture.

Another time I had some cash burning in my pocket so I started looking at 360 games and a rep came over and started being a complete *** because he had a PS3 and it was just oh so much better. His words "Only an idiot would have an Xbox 360 these days." This, after I explained to him I had a 360... Nothing prompted his attitude towards me, I merely was looking at 360 games, I didn't hate on PS3 or even defend the 360. I did speak with his manager afterwards though.

I mostly go into best buy to physically see what they have. And some times I buy a blu ray if I want a slipcover that comes with the blu ray, since amazon alot of the times don't send out slips with their blus after a certain time the movie has been out. But most of the time when I do go to Best Buy they are always trying to sell me a satellite contract and I hate having to be stalked while I'm looking around. If I want a satellite dish I would have kept the one I had.

I totally agree with you...haha it NEVER fails...when I need someone to help me there's no one around and they're all swarmed talking to each other and when I don't need help they can't stop bothering you. I thought it was only my dumb luck
