Shows That Aren't Available for Production Yet

It's strange that some shows like Phantom of the Opera and Wicked haven't yet been available for production perhaps because of the staging yet Miss Saigon and Hairspray are.
But what about older shows like Coco (which got negative reviews, but ran because it starred Katharine Hepburn in her only musical) or The Magic Show (perhaps because it was a vehicle for Doug Henning a magician who didn't even sing in the show).
I guess that's why The Boy From Oz hasn't yet been available. It's an Australian show which was a star vehicle on Broadway for Hugh Jackman. It was a hit but closed after a year and a half because Jackman left the show and there wasn't anyone who could replace him.

My guess is that shows that are still popular on Broadway or on tour aren't available because they want to protect those productions. Not sure about Phantom, but Wicked would be hugely "popular," and a lot of local productions would reduce the demand for the professional shows.

I'd assume lack of interest for the others. Even if someone wanted to stage it, would there be enough audience to make it worthwhile?

Also Mamma Mia which looks like an easy show to stage, not as difficult as Phantom or Wicked. T

L. Hathaway says:
I believe you cannot get production rights to shows that are currently running on broadway. That is why you cannot receive the rights to the Phanton of the Opera and Wicked. I do not know why you cannot get them for the Boy from Oz. Though a high school production of the Phantom of the Opera was done in Spring 2011. Hopefully that helps.

Stephen Schwartz has said the rights for Wicked will be available in the future by MTI.
The Boy From Oz is an Australian musical, and it was a star vehicle on Broadway. Maybe in Australia...

D. Pauley says:
The Rogers and Hammerstein organization is in the process of making Phantom available. It becomes available for productions at high schools and colleges in early September, according to their website.

How frightening! That piece of dreck is bad enough with professionals performing it - think how abysmally bad it would be with amateurs!
