I am debating between Sx and SXi. My biggest concern is a review I read that said the SXi did not do well with backlighting but the XS does.
Does anyone have experience with this issue with either of these cameras

The SXi is a far superior camera to the SX.

I've not heard that. I believe it's like Tom says.

If you look at the specs at DPReview, both the XSi and the XS have a 35 zone metering sensor. Further, the metering EV range also identical. However, the XSi has spot metering capability that the XS lacks.

One way to deal with backlighting is to spot meter the face of a backlit person, and let the background blow out. Fill flash is possible. Exposure compensation can help. Learn how to deal with this kind of photo. Trial and error works, especially when making a bad digital shot just means it goes into the trash.

There's a YouTube video on backlit shooting with the XSi that may be helpful.

The XS cannot do spot metering. If you need more than the XSi's ability, you may need to move up to a 40D or better.

I regard backlighting not as a problem but as an opportunity. Learn to shoot backlit photos, but save your eyes; don't look at/into the sun. If you have exposure problems, shooting raw rather than jpeg allows greater latitude for corrections. Check out the photos as well as the articles in the following:
