I hope someone better versed in cars & audio can help me. I just bought a car which has a radio/cd deck. However, I have many audio books on tape, & I need to know the easiest way to be able to listen to them in my car without an in-dash cassette player. Can a small cassette player/recorder be plugged into the lighter? I know the old Walkman wouldn't work because of the need for ear buds, but there are still a few small recorders made that are supposed to have a strong little speaker, which would work for me, I think. What sort of adapter would I need? Any ideas/suggestions that any one out there might have would be truly appreciated. Thank You!

If the deck in the car has an AUX input, then you get a suitable cable that connects from your cassette players output to the AUX input. Additionally a power adapter that plugs into the cig lighter and provides the appropriate voltage for your cassette player would save you from having to use batteries in the cassette player. If no AUX input is available, another option would be an FM transmitter. You plug the output from your cassette player (or any audio device) into it and tune it to a frequency at which no local station is broadcasting, then tune your car radio to that frequency.

You may want to try this device or equivalent. I'm not recommending this specific device, I just did a quick search for an adequate device that wasn't too expensive and got decent reviews. This is the type of device Keen Observer recommended. Also, if you can get someone to transfer your tapes to MP3 files on USB sticks, you'll be able to play them too -- although it looks like this particular device doesn't keep your spot, which is probably a deal breaker.
