I have a current plan with T-Mobile. I am not up for a phone upgrade, but I want to buy a new phone with a qwerty keypad. Can I just buy an unlocked phone, and put my current sim card into it, and start using the new phone?

Yep. If the phone really is unlocked you should be able to simply insert the sim card.

Also, if the phone is locked to T-Mobile US, you can buy it and just put in your SIM card. (So say... a used/refurb MyTouch Slide or G1.)

i think you can only do that if they have a sim card reader, i know that att and tmobile have it, thats why people unlock their phones, but an unlocked phone should have a sim card slot that looks rectangular with a corner cut off that fits perfectly!

Yes, but since you are on T-Mobile's network, make sure that the unlocked phone says that it is a "GSM" type phone. Otherwise, it might not have a SIM card slot, e.g. Verizon's phones do not have a SIM card slot, and those are called "CDMA" type phones because they use a different type of network.

I am buying the nokia N900 unlock phone. Can I buy a new Tmobile sim card and activate the card myself? I went to a tmobile store and they wouldnt sell me a sim card unless they had the phone's number.. I dont have the phone yet.. I thought it could all be activated over the net..

I assume Amazon must be an authorized T-Mobile dealer, because they sell T-Mobile phones online every day. Nokia doesn't have authorized dealers to the best of my knowledge, because they are a cell phone manufacturer, not a cell phone service company. Do you have an answer to my question, or are you adding your question on to mine for some reason?

Linda, I am sorry I really have no idea what you really need to do. If you already had a T-Mobile account, you would already have a phone number. If you already have a phone number from another provider, just put the sim card from your current phone into the new phone and it should work according to the answers I have been getting on this thread. It is important that your current provider be on a GSM network.

@ J Tucker,

You can use an unlocked GSM phone, or you can use any T-Mobile branded phone (like the pre-paid phones you can find at Target or Wal*Mart).

If you are going with an unlocked phone, and you need "3G" high speed data, make SURE the phone you are getting is compatible with T-mobile's data network. Any GSM phone will work for voice calls on any GSM network, but the high speed packet data networks (3G/3.5G) are different, and incompatible between AT&T & T-Mobile (and Europe is even different from the US).

There are no current phones that are compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobiles fast data. The Nokia N8 will be the first, but it's not available yet.

@ Linda,

Just get any cheap T-Mo phone, activate it, then pop the SIM into your new phone when it arrives. If you are starting a contract with T-Mobile, get one of the freebees (free phone with new contract). If you aren't going with a contract plan, get one of the el-cheapo pre-paid phones from Target or Wal*Mart.

Once your phone+SIM is activated you will be able to use that SIM in the N900 when you get it.

Generally speaking all new "unlocked" phones are GSM. New CDMA phones are all carrier branded are are not available unlocked.

I don't know if you can use an inlocked Nokia 2680 for a verizon account or not. Why don't you post your own question on this board and see if someone who knows will answer you.

To Floris Vazquez,
This post is about 5 years old. So you may not get the responses you desire. You don't need a new sim card. Just put your old sim card into the new phone. If your old sim card is too big, you can CAREFULLY cut it down to the size you need with a razor and use it that way. Thats what I did to put a regular sized sim card into a phone that requires a micro sim card.

I need to replace my Samsung Galaxy S3 with another but my upgrade is not until 2/2016. Can I purchase the same phone from Amazon and place the SIM card into it with my information on it? My service is with Verizon.

J. Tucker says:
No, unfortunately Verizon is a CDMA carrier. That means their phones do not have sim cards. If the phone you purchased on Amazon had a sim card, it would not be compatible with Verizon. However, I think you could buy a Verizon brand phone on Amazon and use it. To be sure, I would ask Verizon first.
