I recommend Santa Saves Boswell ... and then The Firepoint Fables of the North Pole (coming out soon). And yes, I wrote/illustrated them.
Santa Saves Boswell: How Boswell The Blue-eyed Beagle Found A Home
Thanks for your consideration.

definitely AMBER GREY by J.L. Coalwell... best kids/young adult book I've read since I finally was convinced to read Harry Potter and loved it. First book of the Amber Grey trilogy is out and they are great books that, like Potter, parents can feel safe with kids reading.

Ah,yes. One of my very favorite books in 5th grade. It was written by Jean Craighead George (FEMALE writer). It was one book in a three part trilogy (My Side of the Mountain / On the Far Side of the Mountain / Frightful's Mountain). She also wrote Julie of the Wolves. Good call, M. Threadgould!

A huge favourite of mine in the 70's was a book called My Side of the Mountain, can't remember who it was by. It's about a boy aged 12 or 13 who runs away to the Catskill Mountains and survives the winter by building a house and foraging....it's bliss.

I just published (OCTOBER 2011) a YA novel suitable for both boys and girls. It is called, TIME SLIP: Terror in the Texas Wetlands. It was written by me, Stephen Lew. I would range the age group from 8th grade to adult. It is getting welcoming reviews. Check out my website to make an informed decision:

Amazon Kindle offers a free chapter read at the time of this posting. The paperback listing should have a "LOOK INSIDE" preview very soon. Thanks for your consideration, and I hope that you enjoy my publication!

I know this is an old question, and maybe your son already knows about these, but I would recommend The Rangers Apprentice series by John Flannagan. My children and I have read them and they are good clean adventures. My children also liked the Gaurdians of Ga'Hoole, and Fablehaven series.

Perhaps my book 'The Dead Don't Hurt UsThe Dead Don't Hurt Us may be of interest. Educational, adventure fiction based in the Amazon jungle. Tim and Kate are only survivors of a plane crash in the jungle . They make their way to the Peruvian city of Iquitos where they are mistaken for street children. Don't be put off by the scary title (street kids often hide in graveyards because they say the 'dead don't hurt us'). I hope you will find lots of themes in my book that will make you think. Have you tried Ninian Fire? It's become quite a rage over in the UK - nice and clean exciting stories, with cracking of codes etc maybe similar to Enid Blyton's Famous Five but then more contemporary. Start with Fool's Gold, it's beautiful.

My Whiz Tanner Mysteries is a series about two 13 year old boys who manage to solve adult-sized crimes and mysteries without the adult-sized language or violence (clean). They can be found here at Amazon or most online retailers (Kindle and Nook also). The Case of the Phony Masterpiece: A Whiz Tanner Mystery More info can be had at www.WhizTanner.com

My own book, Scout Kii-jin is being released on Aug. 2nd. It's about a space scout who lands and must battle the government and still find the hostile alien she was hunting. Somewhat like 'The Day The Earth Stood Still'
Look for it here on Amazon.com.
Another is The Halfling Princess which just came out.
