Some have recommended Cynthia Rylant's Henry and Mudge. I would recommend Cynthia Rylant's Mr. Potter and Tabby series. Also, M and M books were very popular with my kids. They were the first chapter books they read.

@Janet: Yay! I am glad you enjoyed your time with the little ones :). EZ must be a lot of fun right about now; at 5 months, they are so funny and joyful and looking at everything with such wonder. What a blessing Janet. :)

Thanks, G. How disgusted with Nana do you think EZ will be when he gets to be a teenager and i'm still calling him 'easy'?

Thank you for this thread! I also have a first grader (my oldest) and need to find more books for him. He's read and loved many of the Junie B. Jones and Magic Treehouse books. I'll try some of the others you lovely folks have mentioned!

Hi. My son was reading a Junie B. Jones book at bedtime last night and we were both laughing hysterically. Can anyone recommend other books for first graders with laugh-out-loud humor like that? We had so much fun.

The My Weird School series is hilarious. My first grader sits on the couch reading these books, and just laughs like a mad thing!
My Weird School Daze #11: Mr. Tony Is Full of Baloney!

@Nana: Is there some kind of organized, concerted effort to spam here? Probably not, but it is shameful behavior. To the top!
