I have a couple suggestions:
Spud, by John Van De Ruit - my son LOVED it, and so did I; both of Van De Ruit's books are hilarious
Underwood, by A. M. Henry - has a boy and a girl protagonist, so would appeal to both genders. My son has actually read that one twice since we bought it last month...
The Secret Diaries of Adrian Mole, by Sue Townsend - these are a bit older and less known in the US, but I still find myself practically doubled over laughing when I re-read them.
