Due to the hijacking of the previous thread, I have initiated this thread to continue the discussion on the Eden narrative from the old testament.

All thoughts on this subject are welcome.

Someone sure doesn't like free speech.

I wonder who that could be?

Hmm.....

LINDA: Wow, you really didn't waste any time, did you?

BUCK: Say what thou wilst shall be the whole of the law.

LINDA: LOL! Naughty, naughty...

I hope that's the last we'll see of Crowley for a while. I don't think we need him on this thread any more than we need Heaven101, or whoever this Macheath person is. I think I've seen some of Macheath's posts on other threads but haven't paid too much attention to them.

Not quite Crowely.

Glad you could join me.

>>Maybe you talk too high, man
Maybe I talk too slow
But you've got to live a little bit faster
'Cause you've got a little less time to go

I ain't lost and I ain't searching
But then you know me very well
And I can't change the wind and make it blow the other way
I'm a fool and I can tell

That I'm alive and that's all.
That I can get up just as fast as I fall
And I can walk and run but I'll never crawl
And in the end it doesn't matter at all
I don't know about the people that I read about in books
And the Kings and Queens around my room with their quiet dirty looks
I know I should be going somewhere, I just can't arrive
There's a reason for believing that I've never been alive, alive

I ain't lost and I ain't searching
But then you know me very well
And I can't change the world and make it go the other way
I'm a fool and I can tell.

That I'm alive and that's all
That I can get up just as fast as I fall
And I can walk and run but I'll never crawl
And in the end it doesn't matter at all

There is an excellent biography of Crowley called "The great beast".

It is a very straight and authoritative telling of Crowleys search for knowledge, not shirking away from his outright weirdness, but because of the total lack of interest in it the publishers attempted to sell it as an expose of the horrors of Satan worship, which it simply was not.

The book has since disappeared from general availability and used copies of it are very expensive The Great Beast.

@Buck:

I have to tell you I'm not one of these people with a sneaking fascination with Crowley--not an OTO type at all. I still haven't forgiven Crowley for claiming to be a better poet than Yeats, or for creating a schism in the original Order of the Golden Dawn.

I like the Wiccan Rede much better than Crowley's motto: "An it harm none, do as ye will."

I'm not sure if I'd call Crowley a Satanist exactly, but he certainly harmed a lot of the people around him.

I have no real fascination for Crowley.

He was a sociopathic egomaniac of independant means.

What I find interesting about him is his unwavering search for knowledge.

Admittedly that took him down some strange pathways, and in the end he was subsumed by his own obssesions.

The Golden Dawn got over him.

It a was lesson in humility, that needed to be learnt.

At this point I think it is appropriate to post my manifesto:

>>We were speaking of belief
Beliefs and conditioning
All belief possibly could be said to be the result of some conditioning
Thus the study of history is simply the study of one system of beliefs
Deposing another and so on and so on and so on
A psychologically tested belief of our time is that the central nervous
System, which feeds it's impulses directly to the brain, is unable to
Discern between the real and the vividly imagined experience,
If there is a difference, and most of us believe there is
Am i being clear?
To examine these concepts requires tremendous energy and discipline
To experience the now without preconception or belief
To allow the unknown to occur and to occur requires clarity
For where there is clarity, there is no choice
And where there is choice, there is misery
But then why should anyone listen to me?

Why should i speak since i know nothing?<<

I can't imagine why anyone would give you a -1 on that post. I just gave you a +1 to neutralize it. And three people rated you down on your first post on the thread, after it had been up for about for--what? About 10 minutes? So far it's just you and me posting on this thread, but it's obvious there is someone lurking and being a schmuck on general principles.

The only reason I haven't commented on your last few posts is because it's late, I'm tired and my brain isn't working all that fast. Hopefully more people will discover this thread and thinks will start picking up tomorrow.

Macheath and his minions arrive as expected.

So very predictable.

No, it wasn't. It also meant I liked it but was too tired to answer it. I don't even know why I'm still up right now.

>>[I]n a course I'm teaching on the Powers of the Universe and the Path of Christ, a different and rather startling interpretation came to me. (Startling because G_d represented fear of change and the serpent symbolized the impulse to evolve.) I saw the story of the Garden of Eden as subversive, concerning the power of conscious awareness to open our eyes (Genesis 3:4), liberating us from an unconscious identification with the various cultures that we are embedded within. The myth describes, rather than judges, the human dilemma. We gain the capacity through the light of conscious awareness to see with new eyes the very cultures with which we had previously identified with. This begins, naturally, with the emergence of conscious awareness in the first humans-distinguishing us from our animal kin. This original archaic culture represents an emergence from a naive (unconscious) unity with All That Is-and with this conscious awareness an intensification of suffering, awareness of mortality, the burden of moral choice. In psychological development, this first awakening occurs when it dawns on the baby that mother is not an extension of herself. Unconscious primal unity is lost.<<
