Fingers,

What do you think about the Church of Jerusalem being the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church when it was supposedly run by Jesus brother? Even Peter served that church, in some sense.

Personally, I think the Eastern Church, the Roman Church, and the English Church are all Catholic.

Fingers,

I have no idea what you should think.

Fingers, a question:

Do people who live and then die a Protestant, without ever being a member of the Catholic church, go to heaven/see eternal life, etc.?

"Are there any more you would like to add? Coptic Church?"

I think you missed the point of the post (what a surprise!).

"Do people who live and then die a Protestant, without ever being a member of the Catholic church, go to heaven/see eternal life, etc.?"

I don't see why not. I'm not entirely sure that you need ANY church to find salvation for yourself (ask the thief on the cross) but anybody who thinks they can maintain their faith in a vacuum, without other Christians, is kidding themselves. That takes more concentration than most people have.

I have heard people condemn the "church" as "organized religion" (as opposed to disorganized religion, I suppose) but the truth is that if the church isn't getting it done for you it's because you are not holding up your end of the log. You ARE the church.

My original point here was that as far as the Protestant's cheese has slipped off their respective crackers, you are probably going to have to go back to the church catholic if you want something that is even close to the faith that Jesus practiced or commanded - word and sacrament. I have been in Protestant services where they didn't even read the Bible as part of the service or observe the Eucharist. You might get a little Bible during the sermon, if the sermon is not a motivational seminar.

I am deliberately leaving out the names of denominations because some fruitcake will invariably say "Wait a minute Fingers, I have been a (insert your own denomination) all my life and we are nicer guys than YOU are..."

You also have people who will try to tell you that you have to be socialists to be a first century church but ignore the parts about going forth in one accord, daily prayer, and observing the breaking of the bread.

Then you get the ones who think their religion is their politics, who rail on about the "whore of Babylon", one of the more un-Christian things I hear people say. The first time I heard that was from a guy named Jack Chick, who writes comic books as Gospel tracts.

I hope you get the idea. The Protestant reformation has really gone off the rails.

You are right Fingers. Protestantism is deeply divided , not only in a myriad of denominations but also in their core beliefs:
-Some think that baptism is necessary, some say it is not.
-Some believe in a certain presence of Christ in the Eucharist, some believe it is just a symbol.
-Some believe salvation cannot be lost, some believe that is not the case.
-Some believe that salvation "by faith alone" is an intellectual position (usually a "one time event" from an altar call) while others believe that sanctification is needed.
-Some believe in a literal interpretation of scripture, some try to find other meanings (anagogical, moral, etc),
etc., etc.

Yet, the Bible says that "He is not the God of disorder" (1 Cor. 14:33), while it also tells us that "The Spirit will guide you to all truth" (Jn. 16:13), so how can thousand of different interpretations arise from the same Spirit?

The truth is only one, as Jesus asked the Father "that they may be one" (Jn. 17:22-23), and so the deep division of protestantism is the most palpable proof that private interpretation of the Bible and division is not what God planned for His Church.

JC: If the ultimate outcome of any Christian life is to attain heaven/eternal life, and if good Protestants end up in the same heaven, then why would it matter if the Catholic church is "the one true" one and that "the Protestant Reformation has gone off the rails"?

If it is obvious that "God" doesn't care, why would you?

Congratulations. I hope you and your faith are very happy together.

See how simple and pleasant a conversation can be when you don't add in stuff like "...and everyone else is WRONG and EVIL and STUPID"?

Fingers,
One thing I think of is the fact that Jesus died for the church, Eph.5:24 "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for her." The saved belong to His church, God added them to it, so it is very important. There is a reason for it. I think we would be neglecting God's wishes if we avoid gathering together with the saints(that's what all the saved are called in the scriptures) for worship, Lord's Supper, singing, praying, encouraging one another, etc. The thing is we need to make sure we are doing all this the way Jesus and the Holy Spirit directed through the apostles in the very beginning of the church starting in the Book of Acts. Even though there wa not a N.T. At the time of the church start the apostles were led miraculously by the Holy Spirit at the time to preach and give instructions concerning the church. We have no reason to believe that any of the instructions told by the writers of the N.T. Would not be correct. In Christ, Lora

Actually, I. Dunn, the Coptic Orthodox Church, is
part of the the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church,
but is not in full communion with the Bishop of Rome.

The Orthodox Rite is considered the 'left lung" of the
Roman Catholic Church.

However, the Coptic Catholic Church, one of the Eastern
Catholic Churches, is under the Bishop of Rome, the Pope,
rather than the Orthodox Pope of Alexandria.

.....and there are many more Eastern Catholic Churches.

In addition, with the rarely given permission of the
local presiding bishop, the Catholics and the Orthodox
can share in their respective Sacraments, the Holy
Mysteries, back and forth, but only with permission
from the local bishops.

This is possible because the Roman Catholic [Latin Rite],
the Orthodox [Greek, Russian, et al] Rite, and the
Oriental Orthodox Rite, are ALL part of the One, Holy,
Catholic, Apostolic Church, now numbering more than,
1.66 Billion people, worldwide.

This is what I wrote: "but anybody who thinks they can maintain their faith in a vacuum, without other Christians, is kidding themselves".

It's not a question of what God thinks, all things being equal. It's a question of maintaining your faith.

You seem to have me confused with someone who actually said those things.
