corrected citation

Galations 4 24 says you have to take it figuratively (in NIV)
and NKJV says
....which things are ***symbolic***. ...

Go figure! The bible is not literal.
It even tells us to read it a different way.

And dont pay no nevermind to the allegory, metaphor, simile, etiology, yada yada, not to mention the errors omissions contradictions and obfuscations.

ken says:
Galatians 4:21 (NIV)
21 Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of what the law says?

Is this the scripture you're referring to?

No one takes every word of the Bible literally. When it tells us to be like doves, it doesn't mean we're supposed to grow feathers and lay eggs, and only an idiot approaches it that way. Every verse has to be taken in context and analyzed as part of the whole, if you want to understand it properly. You can't seize on one verse, yank it out into isolation, and then make it mean whatever you want it to. Furthermore, the bible is a book which was never intended to be an encyclopedia to satisfy our curiosity- that's why God gave us brains. It was intended to be something which addressed our needs as spiritual creatures and to teach us the way of salvation. For that very reason, it's usually written in such a way that it touches our emotions and our will, not so much our intellect. As I said, we have brains for that purpose. Approach it like a textbook and you'll never understand it at all. Approach it like poetry or a historical narrative, with the linguistic and artistic licenses which are perfectly appropriate to those types of literature, and it will teach you everything you need to know (although notice I didn't say "want" to know).

Jason Stoll says:
There are passages in the Bible that are literal, and passages that are poetic. All need to be taken in context. Galations 4:21 admonishes those Christians who want to be under the Jewish law and customs out of tradition. Matthew 5:17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." His grace gives us freedom from the law, therefore we should not desire to be under the law any longer, which by the way is the context of Galations 4:21. Galations 4:24 has also been translated "These things can be taken figuratively" which then does not indicate the events did not happen, but that there is real world application today as well.

As far as "the errors omissions contradictions and obfuscations," study the bible, the writings of contemporaries, documented history, and you will find there are few if any "errors omissions contradictions and obfuscations" To argue that the Bible is not accurate or trustworthy, is to say the same about all of antiquity, since the Bible by far has the most supporting documentation, and collaboration with outside sources of any historical document.

Max: Do you have evidence to support this?

B. Nixon says:
1 John 2
25 "This is the promise which He Himself made to us: eternal life.

26 These things I have written to you concerning those who are trying to deceive you.

27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him."

Repeat: "you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things."

The Spirit of God teaches those who belong to Jesus Christ. No human intellect can produce spiritual Light.

reply to ken's post:

it was there in the hard copy i read this morning

cant find it in any search of my cdrom copies now

it clearly said that you had to interpret figureatively

i do find many references to figureative interpretation now
but none as clear as what i saw

problem is this bible is organised by time and they slice the books up
maybe i got the wrong one because of the way they note them

i will have to find the exact quote later for you

but yet many people do take every word literally

and too many take every word literally if they can ,
even with good and better alternative interpretations

reply to Jason Stoll's post:

the more i read the bible the more problems i see wrt
errors omissions contradictions obfuscations etc

there is a book with 800 pages that does a better job at it
i am NOT looking for these problems
they keep finding me

finding a general approach to handling them is a problem
not going to even try to do all of them one at a time case by case
