Dean says:
Tea partiers are fond of making statements like that, but they don't reflect the reality of the Federal budget, or what it's spent on. The biggest monster in the budget is the military, by some estimates 50% of all expenditures are directly related to past and present "defense" matters. Social Security and Medicare actually take up much less money, but those are self-funded insurance programs that should be paying for themselves.

reply to L. Carr's post:

that is not so

2/3 of the waste is for social programs transferring money from producers to other people who dont pay taxes

those programs are not self funded
they are putting money into the govt spending pot and is totally gone and then some having been replaced with worthless ious so when the ponzi scheme collapses nobody will get anything back that you think they funded and is there

Dean says:
Social Security and Medicare ARE insurance programs that are supposed to be self-funded, (and in fact are, for the present. Neither loses money). If they are not stable over the long term, then the revenue stream needs to be adjusted. The other "social programs" you talk about barely exist, they are only a few percent of the budget.

reply to L. Carr's post:

maybe they should be that way
but they are ponzi schemes

using current revenues to pay past obligations
while running up bigger debt
using current payments to partially fund evenmore deficit spending

In reply to an earlier post on May 6, 2012 2:38:54 PM PDT
Dean says:
The fact that their funds have been abused for other programs (mainly defense) does not indicate any fault in their intent or function, just a lack of fiscal honesty in the way Congress operates.

reply to L. Carr's post:

it was set up as a ponzi scheme

fdr knew it would only last 50 years
but the dems got political gains for it back then
so screw the future
and that is what congress has done ever since

problem is that the road the can is being kicked down
now ends a few feet ahead of them at a big cliff
one more kick and it the whole house of cards tumbles down hard

whomper: "neocon nutcases have started too many wars already"

Wars occuring during Democratic Administration:
War of 1812
World War I
World War II
Korea
Vietnam

Wars occuring during Republican Administration:
Civil War
Spanish-American War
Gulf War (Desert Storm)
Iraq
Afghan (continued by Democratic Admin.)

Looks like Dems and GOP are tied 5-5. Dems had a good lead until 1990 - and still have the lead in body count by several million.

Owned By Kitties is Keepin' The Faith Alive says:
Steve, I do not know enough about Romney to comment one way or the other. I can only answer this way. If he believes that Jesus is his Saviour and that He died for the forgiveness of his sins and for the sins of all mankind, if he lives his life in accordance with the Ten Commandments as we are all supposed to do, if he has been baptized by water and by the Spirit, if he meets every condition Jesus set forth for those who wish to follow Him, then he is a Christian.

spl No, he's a Christian cultist. Having a form of godliness, but lacking the power thereof. And he shows his gullibility by believing such ridiculous heresy and blasphemy as the Book of Mormon. The devil is behind the Mormon religion, I don't care what rituals they have, or how much they talk of Jesus Christ. Like the Bible says, the angel comes masquerading as an angel of light. Paul would agree that Smith is the perfect example of a false prophet.

Well, I am a member of the Roman Catholic Church, whomper. So you are calling me the WOB as well.

Book worm says:
Mark
Jesus, nor his early disciples got involved with politics; he said pay cesar his dues, but God his.
Jesus and his early disciples maintained their neutrality, even when the people were looking to make him an earthly King, he did not allow this. This was even when the rulers were persecuting them, torturing them, putting in stocks for not stopping to preach, they disobeyed the rulers, and obeyed God and paid God his dues. Still they never got involved in politics, they left everything in God's hand, (FAITH), they did not take up arms, or look to overthrow the kings, rulers, governors, etc. They had God's holy spirit, they could raise the dead, feed the multitude, cure lame/sick, who wouldn't want them as their earthly Kings, but that was not their agenda.

(John 6:15) 15 Therefore Jesus, knowing they were about to come and seize him to make him king, withdrew again into the mountain all alone.

what you are i cant say but if you dont leave and seek the true church instead of the popes perversions then you may well burn with the WOB

And what is the "true" church, whomper? Yours? Denomination, please. I am a Christian, whomper. FYI, Catholics ARE Christians, contrary to what you may think. Jesus is God and the Son of God. He is the Sacrificial Lamb Who died for my sins on Calvary's Cross. He is my Lord, Saviour, Advocate, Redeemer, etc. He is everything to me.

You can say whatever you wish about the Catholic Church and about me. But you can't take away my relationship with Jesus or my salvation. I am a child of God.

spl: The regular things it's accused of. Bad doctrine. Bad popes. Deification of Mary, purgatory, praying to the saints, etc.

In reply to an earlier post on May 11, 2012 1:11:31 PM PDT
StevePL, my problem is with those who are misinformed about the Catholic Church and our beliefs and teachings. I don't have a problem with the Church itself.

I don't see any bad doctrine. If you have something specific in mind, please let me know.

Yes, there have been bad popes in the Catholic Church. But there have been many more good ones.

The only people who deify Mary are non-Catholics. We know that she is NOT a deity and do not worship her as one. We honor Mary, yes, as the mother of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus. But God is the One we worship.

There is plenty of evidence of Purgatory's existence in the Scriptures.

No Catholic is obligated to pray to Mary (the "Hail Mary" aka praying the Rosary is in the Bible, btw) or to the Saints. But we do believe they are already in Heaven and waiting for us.

Jesus4us says:
This is a different from the one I saw the other day that said 7%. Maybe they excluded the SS interest. In 2008 it was 9.6% It's from Wiki:

"In 2008, $242 billion was spent on interest payments servicing the debt, out of a total tax revenue of $2.5 trillion, or 9.6%. Including non-cash interest accrued primarily for Social Security, interest was $454 billion or 18% of tax revenue.[111]"

spl: Where? Seems to me I'm going through what the Catholics see as purgatory now. Whew! Rough! I could write a book about getting God's judgment and chastizement! I've been such an idiot.

whomper (reply to Yog-Sothoth's post): your point being ?

My point being that it is asinine to claim starting or prosecuting wars is in any way part of the agenda of ANY political party. Dems are no more (or less) guilty of it than the GOP. My example was, "If you want to throw stones, check out the statistics first - you may find youself inside a house of glass."
