What is the difference between the Old and New Covenant spoken of throughout the New Testament and promised throughout the Old?
This has been a life long journey for me from trauma and guilt to one of love and grace. I want to share this and hear from you on your thoughts. If this helps you develop a relationship with a nonshaming God great if not I pray something will find you so you can have that type of relationship.

R. Hildreth says:
Which Ministry are You?

Please continue reading 2 Corinthians 3:7-18

Two ministries spoken of here: the old and the new. Written on stone
tablets or written on your heart which do you want to follow? Well one
of the ministries is called "the ministry of condemnation" the other
is "the ministry of justification". One ministry people had to hide
behind a veil "over their minds" the other "the veil is removed. Ok I
am not a rocket scientist but this is pretty much a no brainer is it
not? Here I am standing before a judge in fact "THE JUDGE" and he
says, "Boy I will give you a choice, do you want condemnation or
justification?" Unless you are into pain and torture it shouldnt be a
hard choice to make. Lets get the veil outta here!
Hope you have a veil free loving week ahead and remember GOD loves you
so much he took the condemnation so we could be free to "LOVE ONE
ANOTHER!!!!!!"

How does the ultimate legalist deal with the ultimate grace giver?

Please read John 8: 12-59?

When I read this passage I am reminded that even though I am free not
everyone welcomes my freedom. Just like JESUS wasn't welcome for HIS
message of freedom you won't be either. One of the greatest passages of
the Bible for me however comes in the midst of this conflict with the
legalist. Look at vs. 34-36! The question I have for you today is, are
you a son of Abraham or a son of GOD? Please be a son of GOD and be
free! Remember the son has a place at the table "forever". Wow it is so
liberating to know that nothing can separate us from the Love of GOD.
Please be free today. To rephrase a modern slang expression, Let Christ
free your heart and your mind will follow!

R. Hildreth says:
How will you be righteous?

Please read Romans 3:21-31

Wow this is what its all about!! My best is filthy rags and I don't
have a snowballs chance in Hell of being righteous through the Law.
But because of Jesus and what he did I can be righteous not because
of me doing but his doing. This state of being keeps my eyes on HIM
because HE made me righteous not me and my effort. The Law was made
complete in me the day I asked HIM into my heart. This is why Paul
said "to live is Christ but to die is gain". Vs. 28: "For we maintain
that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law".
I am not saying that the law is now obsolete; if the law wasn't
around I wouldn't know how much I needed HIM. But the "NEW LAW" that
CHRIST put on my heart and yours if you are a Christian is, "LOVE
ONE ANOTHER".

I grew up singing "God is Love" but in the back of my mind I
thought "God is Love until I break the law and then God is a
thunderbolt up my ass". The fact is GOD is total LOVE in that he
provided a way for you and me to be righteous and before we couldn't
have done that. HIS only son is what HE sacrificed and all he ask
you to sacrifice is your quilt and shame. If that's not an amazing
bargain for you and me I don't know what is.

R. Hildreth says:
What will last for all times?
Please read Luke 7:36-50

Isnt it amazing that again CHRIST shows the difference between "the
law" and "LOVE." This "sinner" woman was made whole because of an act
of LOVE through the faith and understanding that JESUS was the
Messiah. A couple of points that I find interesting here:
1) The teachers of the law still saw her as dirty. They (teachers of
the law) still saw her as "a sinner" woman. JESUS did not see that
and in fact spoke of her sin in the past tense. Isnt it interesting
as far as we know this womans behavior never changed. Whatever made
her "sinful" in the eyes of the all holy and proud "teachers of the
law" was apparently still there. The Bible does not go out of its way
to tell how this woman miraculously stopped her behavior. The only
stress here is that this woman "LOVED much" because she was forgiven
much.
2) The single act of LOVE upstaged all the holy law teachers that
were present and to be honest this lady pissed them off. Where LOVE
is the law with its absolute, black or white, wrong or right attitude
is not now nor will it ever be comfortable. The law doesnt like
things that are not easy to interpret or outside the box. But also
this single act of LOVE by someone like you or me was remembered and
all the sacrifices and blood spilt out by these holier than thou law
teachers was not even mentioned.

I want to encourage YOU to LOVE someone today. Give of yourself and
LOVE today because that is what will last. The LOVE you give as JESUS
gave is what will matter in the end nothing else.

Have a GRACE-FULL day!

R. Hildreth says:
How will we really know who belongs to JESUS?

Please read John 13:34-35

Are you under the new commandment? Do people see you and see the love
of CHRIST?
This is the new commandment and its the reason that you and I are
free in CHRIST. Its like the political debate a few years ago in the
US only instead of, "its the economy stupid" I would say, "its the
LOVE stupid!" Its not about your sexuality, or politics. Its not
about how many times you go to a building, the kind of clothes you
wear or any other superficial bull! Its ALL about the LOVE!
This is the new commandment the new covenant and the most exciting
development in the history of all mankind. Its not about the "doing"
its about the "BEING." The being in you CHRIST who brings light and
love into an otherwise darkened world. LOVE others like HE loved you!
CHRIST in YOU the hope of GLORY!

I hope and pray that today you get a chance to show LOVE to someone.
It may be a very small thing but its LOVE thats all that matters.
Just yesterday I had a day off and as I drove around with a co-worker
we came to a massive palace that was never finished. Story has it
that Saddam was building it for his daughter when the invasion took
place. Well the US bombed it out and now its just a massive monument
to the fact that nothing that we do on this earth will last. Nothing
that is except what is done in LOVE! Look how long CHRIST actions
lasted. LOVE like HE LOVED and watch what happens.
(look for some pictures in the photo section)
Have a GRACE-Full day

R. Hildreth says:
Does Jesus have anything to say about the difference between religion and spirituality?

Please read Matthew 23:1-36

Isn't it interesting that the one group CHRIST says cant escape hell
is the "teachers of the law." The people who make a show of religion
and make the biggest display of their devotion are the least likely
to to see GOD. Could this still be applicable to todays world? Can
anyone show me a place where it says anything about not loving
someone because our main focus should be outward appearances?
JESUS came to show us that its all about the heart. "If your heart
does not condemn you, you are not condemned" is not just a catchy
slogan. This is the result of the way JESUS provided for us. It was
also ultimately the reason why the church/temple/religious leaders
had to have him killed. The thought of the loss of control really
worried these, "Snakes! Brood of vipers!" This was all these people
knew the position and the power and the money from all these people
who thought that they were not worthy. JESUS made everyone who
believes worthy by his death burial and resurrection. GOD doesn't
want some showy, glossy, fancy white Anglo Saxon protestant who
makes a big show of being a "Christian." What HE wants and what the
world needs now more than ever are LOVERS!! People who love no
matter what the cost and no matter how humanly difficult the price
may be. Be careful of the teachers of the law they will take you
with them right to hell.

Dont worry be GRACE-FULL

R. Hildreth says:
What is a life in the spirit?

Please read Romans 7:1-6

Are you dead yet? I certainly hope so because if you are not dead yet
how can you be with CHRIST in the "SPIRIT" instead of the "letter of
the law." The letter of the law sets everyone up for failure, for
absolute no exception crushing defeat failure. But this is where the
LOVE comes from. Who will you love more the guy with the big stick
waiting to hit you upside the head; or the LOVING caring JESUS who set
you FREE from that "letter of the law." You can no longer commit
adultery if you are under GRACE because that husband (law) has been
done away with in the body and blood of JESUS!

Either JESUS sets you FREE from the old covenant and the law or he
didnt change anything and therefore means nothing. You cant have it
both ways so make a decision which side of this fence you are on.

Have a GRACE-FULL day

R. Hildreth says:
What is meant by bear fruit?

Please read John 15:9-17

There is a LOVE that is above any type of LOVE a person can
comprehend. It can be seen at times and places when one would not
expect to see LOVE which makes it all the more peculiar, a war zone
for an example like I am in now. Last night several morters landed
close to the area where I am currently staying. We have no idea when
these attacks will come, how many morters will be fired at a time, or
for that matter where they will land. But in the middle of the attack
a person that I have never met and perhaps never will came running
through my compound to say, "stay within the blast walls!" These are
a protective wall that runs all around certain areas that keeps an
attack (unless direct) from hitting us. Well it was pretty good
advice but as I thought about it later I couldnt help but think, "Why
did this guy do that?" I mean it wasnt his job and he certainly didnt
get any extra pay and he put himself in harms way to do that. Now I
am not saying he is an example of CHRISTlike LOVE but I am trying to
say that the LOVE you give to people makes them think. I cannot
convert anyone! Its not my job! I didnt die on the cross and
therefore I am powerless to try to get rid of another's sins but I was
only commanded to LOVE under the new covenant. Because of the power
of CHRIST in me the hope of glory I can LOVE because I am nor
responsible to judge. I am not the judge nor would I want to be but I
am responsible to LOVE! LOVE! LOVE! LOVE makes the fruit grow, LOVE
brings people to you because the world is hungry for LOVE! What the
world needs now is LOVE sweet LOVE! LOVE as HE LOVED!
Try this start each day:
1) With counting all the good things that you can smile about!
2) Write down some ways that you will show LOVE today!

Take some time to meditate on John 15:7 and as always
Dont worry be GRACE-FULL

Is Jesus a Democrat or a Republican?

Please read Matthew 22:15-22.

This is the first time in a long time that I have been around a
group of Americans around election time. Everyday I see the news
dealing with the upcoming election and I am always amazed just how
many people really think that GOD is a conservative republican. Can
I reveal GODs political party to you? The only party HE cares about is
YOU!!! Look at this passage carefully CHRIST did a lot of things
while HE was here on earth why did this one make it into the Bible?
Simply because CHRIST wanted to let you know that politics interest
HIM about as much as acne on a toad. IT JUST DOESNT MATTER! Nothing
does except LOVE! "Give to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and
to GOD the things that are GOD's. Hey guess what both Caesar and GOD
claim to own everything guess which one is right? Well I am no great
scholar of world history but I am pretty sure Caesar is now only in
control of a salad. GOD controls everything and nothing happens
without HIS permission so our focus shouldn't be this kingdom but the
kingdom of the heart built on LOVE for one another. I am not saying
don't pay taxes but what I am saying is LOVE IS ALL THAT MATTERS! Not
leaders or rulers or anything else only LOVE.

R. Hildreth says:
How can you stop worrying?
Please read Philippians 4:4-9

I love this passage for several reasons but as those who have been
in this club for a while can probably guess the main reason I love
it is because its impossible to do if a person is under the law
instead of grace. Tell me when was the last time you saw a policeman
beside the road and rejoiced? When was the last time you had mail
from the IRS and thought "Yippe!" Maybe this is a shot in the dark
but I will guess never. If the GOD I serve is the GOD of law and
punishment do you think it would be easy to "Rejoice in the LORD
always"? The reason we can rejoice in HIM and the reason we can keep
our mind on vs. 8 "whatever is true, whatever is just, whatever is
pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable" the reason why
we can be free from worry is that once in CHRIST we no longer serve
the GOD with the lightning bolts who is ready to condemn us. We
serve the GOD of the new covenant who has set us free by the death,
burial and resurrection of HIS only SON. When we accept CHRIST that
same death happens to us and we are now new creations able to stop
worrying about GOD and start LOVING GOD and others.
I hope and pray that you have a Grace-Full week.

R. Hildreth says:
You can change the World!
Please read John 14:12-14

This is a beautiful example of how we can in fact change the World.
Look at what JESUS did with 12 people and LOVE and yet here HE tells
us that, "I tell you, the one who believes in ME will also do the works
that I do and in fact will do greater works than these, because I am
going to the FATHER." On face value this could be a justification to
continue legalism but wait why would JESUS need to come just to show
us how to follow the law that had been around for centuries? Many
times I hear this passage and in particular vs. 15 used to proliferate
legalism. But again the legalist stop short for in the next chapter vs. 10-
14 we see HIS commandments,
" If you keep MY commandments, you will abide in MY LOVE, just as I
have kept my FATHER'S commandments and abide in HIS LOVE. I have
said these things to you so that MY joy may be in you, and that your joy
may be complete. This is my commandment, that you LOVE one another
as I have LOVED you."
The rest of this passage goes on to say that through LOVE JESUS calls
us "friends." I dont know about you but the idea of an all powerful GOD
reaching out nail scarred hands to hug me and call me friend is mighty
nice in fact downright incredible when I consider what I deserve.
JESUS said we would do greater things than HE had done but how is
that possible?
Its possible through LOVE! Its possible through what is happening as I
type this in Houston Texas. Almost makes you forget whose home state
that is doesnt it. Its happening through the kid I just say on Fox who
stole the school bus to take 70 people on an 8 hour bus ride to Houston.
LOVE and the power of LOVE is amazing. I didnt notice until I finally
arrived at the Muslim school in a small village the other day but I had an
American flag on my shirt. Nobody cared because of LOVE. LOVE
transcends politics and all the other legalistic BS that divides people.
I love you all. Please post any links to where we can get help to through
this website. GOD bless you all!

Dont worry Be Grace-Full!

R. Hildreth says:
Can hunger make you a sinner?

Please read Matthew 12:1-8.

Do people trying to get you on guilt trips piss you off? They do me
and I dont try to hide it. CHRIST refused to live under a microscope
and I refuse to do that as well. If GOD is like the "teachers of the
law" please tell me who would want to have a close relationship with
him? When will people understand that CHRIST didn't come to make
clones but instead HE came to "reconcile" us to HIM. HE came to
create a way to a close personal relationship with GOD ALMIGHTY. Look
at verse 6,"But I tell you that something greater than the temple is
here." Could it be that today something better than the "teachers of
the law" and the "temple" is still here. You can bet your double
latte it is and that is JESUS! Nonjudgmental and Nonconformist JESUS.
One of my favorite passages is simply this, "I desire mercy and not
sacrifice."
Be the pot GOD made you to be and walk with HIM. HE accepts you as
you are the way you are and you can accept HIM and never worry about
guilt and shame again.
Don't worry, Be GRACE-FULL

all your soul, and with all your mind...You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (2)

Philippians 3:8,9- "... I count all things to be loss...in order that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ."

Colossians 2:16-18,20-23- "let no one act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to ...a Sabbath day- things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ...why act as if you were living in the world, do not submit yourself to decrees, such as , "Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!" (which all refer to things destined to perish with the using) - in accordance with the commandments and teachings of men? These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence."

OTHER SUGGESTED SCRIPTURES
Romans 3:31; 7:1-4; Colossians 3:14; 1 Timothy 1:8-9; James 2:9-11

(1) This is a statement of the clear and definite inference in verses one and two.
(2) Refer to HOW IS THE LAW FULFILLED? references.
(3) The word "men" is placed here in the NASV but, at best, is only implied in the Greek.

R. Hildreth says:
Who is Condemned?

Please read John 3:11-21.

One of the more interesting versus here is the comparison between
the serpent and JESUS. Moses was in the wilderness and his rod had
been turned into a serpent. He was told to hold it up which he did
and it became a rod again. Keep in mind that the rod was not an
instrument to beat someone with; the rod actually had a couple of
functions. First it made your steps stable as a walking stick and
helped you get up mountains and hills. Secondly it was a guide for
the sheep to help them know the way. JESUS has done that for us and
continues to do that for us. Just as a serpent symbolizes the Devil
so CHRIST became sin so that HE could take our place and ¡°be lifted
up¡± on the cross. It should have been you and me on that cross!
Thank GOD HE saw fit to provide the rod to help me walk and be my
guide but even more then that to take my place so that, vs. 18,
¡°Those who believe in HIM are not condemned; but those who do not
believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the
name of the only SON of GOD.

R. Hildreth says:
Who are the dangerous ones? Who should I be careful to avoid?

Please read Galatians 5:1-15?

Who are the dangerous people we should stay away from? Well
according to Paul it's the
Freedom stealers.

These are the people who say we should go back to
the law even after we have JESUS. Paul had a simple solution for
them but just thinking about it makes me say Ouch!!! Vs. 1 states
clearly that CHRIST made us free for freedom sake and the
burden he is talking about the yoke is very dangerous because
if we go back to it CHRIST is no longer of any value to us.
Maybe this is why Paul suggested complete emasculation for those
preaching this. Ok just in case you are not in pain yet Paul said if
you go back to the law for some form of righteousness you are
obligated to obey the whole law. The whole law cannot be
followed so don't try we were not called to do that and it can't be
done. Vs. 6 sums it all up, For in Christ neither circumcision nor
uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith
expressing itself through love. Keep in mind that the Jews of this
day were saying that they were more holy because they were
circumcised and if anyone wanted to be holy they had to do things
the way they did them. CHRIST came to get rid of the hoops people
jump through so that through the law all men would be equally
condemned and therefore could be just as equally needy and therefore
just as equally made righteous.

R. Hildreth says:
BE CAREFUL THIS IS DANGEROUS!!
Please meditate on Matthew 16:6

The Law is dangerous in fact extremely dangerous for spirituality.
Keep in mind that I consider spirituality a walk with CHRIST.
Why is it so dangerous?
Well the short answer is it makes you an arrogant pompous person that
is really difficult to be around. The long answer is it puts you at a
distance from the ones that need you and need GOD the most. The
reason CHRIST detested the "teachers of the law" was that they were
doing things that they could boast about. This boasting set up a
situation where one person could according to the ideas of the
teachers of the law get closer to GOD or more holy. As I stated in
earlier studies this idea is contrary to that which CHRIST came to
set up, "the new covenant." Under the new covenant every man was even
more guilty than before. CHRIST added things like the idea of "if you
think it you have sinned." Wow ever been to a beach in South America!
So now we are even more guilty and have no way to "work" our way to
GOD so we are totally screwed right? No because in one word, "JESUS"
all that sin was washed away and we were made free!!
It is interesting here that CHRIST uses the word, "yeast" or "leaven"
which is what makes bread rise. Basically to me this means the stuff
they are using might make you feel big and puffed up but thats where
that form of holiness ends!
Please remember to be holy as HE is holy does not mean you should go
die on a cross HE already did that so get down off that cross. Be
HOLY by LOVING OTHERS and therefore LOVE HIM at the same time. If we
lived this way wouldn't the world be a better place then trying to
compete for holiness.

R. Hildreth says:
"Never trust a spiritual leader who cant dance."
This is a line from a movie I was watching while I was sweating out
Dinghe fever in a Bangkok hotel. Dont even know the name of the
movie but this thought was so wonderful I thought I would share it
with you.

When I think of dancing I think of a child. As a child I could dance
and I could sing and even if it was terrible it was ok. As I grew I
was told "oh its wrong to dance" and "oh you cant sing." This for me
is one of the amazing things about GRACE and LOVE it accepts all
things. I think one of the things that GOD does for us when HE comes
into our hearts and lives is HE makes us like children again.
Take a look at Luke 18:15-30

As a child nothing else matters except here and now and loving life
and the moment. As a child I am full of wonder and ready to try
things and I see things for the first time. As a child I can accept
LOVE and sit at the feet of JESUS and laugh and play and be safe.
The trouble is we grow up and get bitter and set in our ways and we
remember bad things that were done to us. To help overcome the bad
done to us we tell ourselves "if I get alot of money then the pain
will go away" or "if I become powerful then everyone will respect me
and I will feel good." But the problem that CHRIST saw with this is
simple it doesnt work. It doesnt matter what you try to fill the
void with it doesnt work the only thing that does heal the pain is
LOVE! Perfect LOVE from above! The kind that you can only get from
JESUS. GOD is LOVE and nothing else will help you and I to dance.

Lets dance everybody!

R. Hildreth says:
How does God want us to deal with difficult people?

Please read Romans 12:14-21

I am overwhelmed everyday by the amount of bitterness that is in our
World. Has anyone else had to deal with bitterness? It wasted a big
part of my life. The past is the past but I was wondering if GOD had
any wisdom on this. This passage is great in dealing with difficult
people. Take a look at vs.18, "If it is possible, so far as it
depends on you, live peaceably with all." I kind of look at this as
saying make every effort to love people even the ones who are
frankly "difficult."
This is not easy but I believe thats why Paul talked about "work out
your salvation." We were perfected the instant we came to CHRIST in
the spiritual sense but past memories and painful events from the
past can still haunt us. When Paul wrote this keep in mind that he
had every reason to be bitter. His own people turned thier back on
him and it was hard for him to keep track of how many times he was
beaten, imprisoned and lets not forget how many people wanted him
dead. But herein is the lesson and perhaps one of Pauls greatest
lessons, vs 21 "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with
good." Bitterness can and will ruin your life and make you unable to
LOVE others. One of the greatest steps in working out our salvation
I feel therefore is to be able to live with the knowledge that LOVE
involves even those who in our humaness we couldnt LOVE but through
HIM all things are possible.

R. Hildreth says:
Want to be FREE?
Please read John 8:30-36

Another great question here is are you a son or a slave?
You cant be both and apparently according to JESUS there is a big
difference. Here it is in simple terms. Once you accept CHRIST, you
are no longer a slave to sin because the law which made it a sin no
longer applies to you. You become a son or daughter to be politically
correct and according to vs. 36 you will remain in HIS house forever.
So am I saying that a person who is a son cannot sin. Well if you mean
by sin to break the law yes that is exactly what I am saying. I can
not sin against GOD because I cannot break the law! I can act in an
unloving way and therefore hurt or sin against another person and
thats why so much emphasis in the Bible is put on "love others as I
loved you" and "love one another."
JESUS is the truth and that truth will indeed set you FREE! FREE to
LOVE others with no judgment! FREE to love others without thinking
about right and wrong or good and bad only focus on the LOVE!

R. Hildreth says:
Who is wise and understanding?

Please read James 3:13-18

It's interesting to me that the writer mentions "bitter envy and
selfish ambition in your hearts" as a way to tell if someone's wisdom
is from above. He didn't mention make sure that the wisdom says
follow the letter of the law. He didn't say make sure that the wisdom
is talking about building a bigger church. No instead he said that
true wisdom is "first pure, then peaceful, gentle, willing to yield,
full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or
hypocrisy." As I have said before and I wanted to make sure that I
am clear on I do believe that grace can and is different for
different people.
Just like our last study showed and just like I would not talk about sexuality around my Mom or drink beer around her. Not because I think those things are wrong
but because I love her and she thinks they are. Our wisdom and the
things we say and do need to be without envy and that is a point
that took years of being really angry and GOD for me to get beyond.
But as stated in earlier post that angry period is when GOD
is "gently" and LOVINGLY waiting so that the peace of GOD that
surpasses all understanding can guard our hearts and minds.
We might be angry about our sexuality or angry about our lot in life
or the way our family treated us but the bottom line is that GODs
wisdom and way produces peace in us and therefore through us.
Take a look at vs. 18 in fact this is a great meditation for today:
(vs.18) "And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those
who make peace." Peace will come when we accept who we are and how
we were made in the image of GOD and forgive.

R. Hildreth says:
Who is Foolish?

Please read Galatians 3:1-14.
The fool here is pretty well spelled out. One thing about Paul he
didn't beat around the bush! If you have accepted CHRIST as your
righteousness and yet you go back to the law you are a fool. The law
didn't make any of us holy but THANK GOD HIS SON DID! Take another
look at vs. 2-3

"I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the
Spirit by observing the law, or by believing in what you heard? Are
you foolish? After beginning with the SPIRIT, are you now trying to
attain your goal by human effort?"

That's what the law is all about human effort. It goes on to say in
vs. 10 that "All who rely on observing the law are under a curse". I
consider myself a fairly adventuresome kind of person but being under
a curse from GOD is NOT my idea of having an adventure and defiantly
out of what I want for my life. Another thing to consider here is
that if you rely on the law you have to keep the whole law- two
words Good Luck. You are going to need it in a big way. No one can
possibly hope to keep the whole law.
So is the law contrary to GODs promise- Absolutely not!
Take a look at versus 21-25. CHRIST took the promise to the next
level. If we could have gotten live through some law then HE wouldn't
have needed to come. But it's like trying to get Jerry Falwell to
accept a homosexual- it aint gonna happen just like we aren't going
to get live from the law. In Texas terms "that dog won't hunt".
The kicker for me is vs. 25, "we are no longer under the supervision
of the law"
So don't be foolish be free and get a life.

R. Hildreth says:
What works do we have to do?

Please read John 6:25-34

What a great passage but to me the key here is in vs. 28-29. The
people had eaten the day before and they were trying to get close to
JESUS because they had seen him bless and multiply the food and they
were amazed by HIS teachings. So they ask a typical question for a
group of people based on works=holiness type of mentality, they
ask, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" I like the word
requires here because it reminds me of the University. Whenever I
started a class I really didn't like I said, "What is required to get
by?" basically the same question the people were asking of JESUS.
Can I really have a relationship with someone if I ask, "What is
required to have a relationship with you?" Try asking your
significant other that one sometime. Again in Texas terms, that dog
won't hunt. To have a relationship with someone I need to be in love
with that person in one form or another. I love my Mother so I have
a relationship with her. I love my wife so I have a relationship
with her. So my question to you is if you have to constantly be
worried about the law and breaking it can you really have a
relationship with GOD?
Another interesting point here is that this is the perfect
opportunity for CHRIST to say, "Keep all the law and GOD will like
you" but he doesn't. He simply says, "The work of GOD is this: to
believe in the ONE HE has sent." Wow what a cool thing for people
who had lived lives of absolute law and being human doings up to
that point. Believe in JESUS and that's it HE didn't say the "d" word
at all. That's right he didn't use "do this" or "do that".
He is the bread of life and the end of the law for all who believe
will never go hungry or feel shame and guilt again.
