Personally, I would have put the divider between the Genesis games between "Wind and Wuthering" and "...And Then There Were Three", but it's your game and I understand the reason. Personally though, I feel Hackett's departure marked a larger stylistic change than Gabriel's. At any rate, I have every Gabriel-era album except "Trespass" and "From Genesis To Revelations".

ttc-I hear you. It's a much bigger style change from Wind and Wuthering to And Then There Were Three than from The Lamb to Trick but I know there's many Gabriel fans that are vehemently opposed to anything once he left.

I agree that the departure of Hackett had a much more significant impact on the Genesis sound, but there's no way to satisfy all fans. I got into the same thing with the Rush game, as I wanted to cut it off after Signals and found that there were people upset that I'd excluded the next three albums and others that thought I should be less inclusive.

I'm just glad to see someone putting up a Genesis game, let alone two.

thanks,Lauren. I'm one of those rare people that love both eras of Genesis. My favorite period actually is 76-77 when they were 4. Those 3(2 studio and 1 live) records and the song Inside And Out are my favorite but I can also enjoy Abacab as well as Foxtrot and I actually thought their last effort We Can't Dance had some real strong tracks on it that reminded me more of classic Genesis

"many Gabriel fans that are vehemently opposed to anything once he left."

It's a similar story with Roger Waters leaving Pink Floyd, which came up in the Pink Floyd game. Of course though, David Gilmour's era was only 2 albums, as opposed to Collins's 8, and I'm pretty sure that, unlike Collins, no one is going to argue that the Gilmour's albums were the absolute high point of the Floyd.

"I actually thought their last effort We Can't Dance had some real strong tracks on it that reminded me more of classic Genesis"

Certainly they did go back to the progressive style on the last album. Honestly, I don't think the prog influences ever actually completely left the band. They still had stuff like "Domino" on the "Invisible Touch" album.

My Genesis discography isn't complete sadly, it's missing Duke, Genesis, Wind and Wuthering, and the pre-Nursery Cryme material. It's missing Calling All Stations, but most people don't count it anyway.

@Curry Of the ones you're missing, I consider Wind the strongest, though some don't like way Banks' keyboards dominate in places. Genesis may be the best of the poppier stuff, the annoying "Illegal Alien" notwithstanding. I don't find either the first two - does Genesis to Revelation really count?? - or Duke particularly interesting.

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 2, 2012 1:33:51 PM PDT
@Lauren

Funnily enough, I read that Wind and Wuthering is one of Banks' favorite Genesis albums. While he's a good keyboardist, the interviews I've seen with Tony Banks make him seem like kind of a jerk. He always makes little remarks about other Genesis members playing over him and Peter Gabriel commented on how the band would get into arguments with Banks over his tendency to constantly write in long, extensive keyboard solos.

Anyway, I have heard a good deal of the songs from Wind and Wuthering. Really, diverse as Genesis' music is, From Genesis to Revelation and Calling All Stations seem like a different band.

Posted on Nov 2, 2012 1:35:58 PM PDT
Music Lover says:
ttc-I'd second Lauren's feeling on Wind and Wuthering. you really need to purchase it next. It contains 5 of the most classic sounding Genesis tracks-Eleventh Earl, One For The Vine(my personal favorite), Your Own Special Way,Blood On The Rooftops and Afterglow.

Duke would be the next most important for you to get in my opinion. It does feature some of the trio's best work-the opening Behind The Lines connected to Duchess. It features some of their shorter hits like Turn It On Again and Misunderstanding too but I enjoy the deeper tracks like-Heathaze, Alone Tonight and Duke's End.

Genesis the record has a few excellent moments imo-Mama,Home By The Sea. some decent hits-That's All, Just A Job to Do, Taking It All Too Hard,It's Gonna Get Better. Illegal Alien is very repetitive though I did find it quite humorus at the time. Silver Rainbow is kind of interesting.

Posted on Nov 2, 2012 2:23:35 PM PDT
Lauren says:
@Music Lover I'd add that "...In That Quiet Earth" is a great instrumental that builds nicely and finishes with a beautifully gentle segue into "Afterglow". I think that segue may be one of my favorite Genesis moments, period.

I may need to revisit Duke, which I owned on vinyl years ago and rarely played, as the slower songs just didn't grab me as the ones on "...And Then There Were Three" did. Others have recommended the longer, thematic tracks like "Duchess" and "Duke's End".

Posted on Nov 2, 2012 3:10:44 PM PDT
Music Lover says:
Lauren-you are right.there are some beautiful instrumental passages preceding Afterglow-good point.
Yes I always enjoyed Duke a lot more than And Then There Were Three. I loved Down and Out and Burning Rope and there was some real nice ballads-Follow you,Undertow, Snowbound,Many Too Many and Say It's Alright,Joe but a lot of dead spots on that record for me-Ballad Of Big,Deep In The Motherlode,Scenes and The Lady Lies.
Duke was much more of a seamless transition throughout-the conceptual songs-Behind/Duchess/Guide Vocal/Man Of Our Times and then Duke's Travels And Duke's End bookend the album perfectly

In reply to an earlier post on Nov 2, 2012 3:46:40 PM PDT
I've had "And Then There Were Three" for a while now, but I've never listened through the whole thing. I just can't really get into it; not much grabs my attention. I like Snowbound and Follow You, Follow Me, though.

Posted on Nov 2, 2012 4:00:50 PM PDT

ttc-yes I always found Mike's lyrics on Snowbound very interesting(and morbid)

I'm not playing, but a few random thoughts:

Duke is the best of the post-Hackett era, by far

I am a diehard Gabriel fan, but am not vehemently opposed to Trick of the Tail and Wind (I did say "post-Hackett" era, after all)

the_third_curry really needs to get "Trepass". Phillips and Mayhew are no Hackett and Collins, but they do *not* suck, and it's among Gabriel's best work

Banks is more than just a "good" keyboardist. He wrote most of the music, no reason he couldn't indulge himself

++++++++ The Musical Box, ad infinitum

That is all...
