Pretty cool, CDL. I liked the next couple minutes too. Yeah, around 5:30 when the drum solo kicks in in earnest, then I lose interest. Drum solos...damn, are there ANY that last more than a few moments that are really essential? I'm sure there are, but they're not springing to my mind off-hand....

Of course, as I'm typing this, the last minute or so IS blowing me away...

@ Ray re: Sailor's Tale

Found the link below from YouTube. It's the same recording that was edited (now I know why) for Earthbound. The sound quality is poor, but Fripp does some top-notch shredding, particularly from about 3:00 through 4:05 (although he starts at around 2:00); after that Ian Wallace's unimpressive drum solo just finishes the song out. Fripp, Burrell, Collins and Wallace obviously were not as tight live at Fripp, Wetton, Cross and Bruford.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxnvp3lArBM

And your observations re: S&BB and Fracture are dead-on as far as I'm concerned. S&BB has always been more of an improvisational piece, while Fracture seemed to have been pretty well structured by Fripp before recording (although I'm sure he didn't plan on the yelp of jam-happy delight at around 9:00.) When you put the two back-to-back, it makes for one heck of an instrumental album side.

I'm pretty cheap, so I probably won't be buying it. If there's not a representative version on Youtube, I'll probably live without it. There's already so much music, so little time!

Just be careful what you are willing to spend to get that Earthbound version of Sailor's Tale, Ray. The recording is severely edited and Fripp's "bring-me-to-tears" guitar solo is a very distorted electric guitar solo that is completely different from the "sheet metal shaking" solo on the studio version. I even commented on an Amazon written review of Earthbound , as copied and pasted in the paragraph below:

Great review, although I honestly don't even like this version of "Schizoid Man" that much. The only redeeming thing for me about this awful joke of a live recording is Fripp's bone-chilling guitar solo in "A Sailor's Tale". It's as if Bob said: "Well, the rest of the band may have sucked, but check out what I was capable of doing!"

If you can find Earthbound somewhere for $10 or less, it's worth having for that solo alone, but I wouldn't dole out the $15-$20 that's being asked for in most places. The sound quality is truly awful (Atlantic refused to release it at first in the U.S.) and the band was not very cohesive on the Earthbound recordings.

Ray Wilson says:
I have to say that Crimson has so much material that I have chronically neglected the live stuff, CDL. Although for years I drooled over the possibility of ever getting my hands on The Great Deceiver box set (since it's been split into two CD's it doesn't seem as charming, and I still haven't picked it up). I know that's bizarre...blowing off Live Crimson. That's like saying I'd enjoy Crimson more if there wasn't so much guitar. Or rating Epitaph outside my top 10...oh yeah, I did that too.

Devil's Triangle. You're right, people seem to dismiss it. Even among those who admire it, it's tainted by the stink of theft. Well, I'm ignorant enough that I am unfamiliar with the sources Fripp supposedly shop-lifted from, so I can enjoy the work on its own merits. I'll leave it to others to argue that Robert Fripp is not creative enough on his own.

Sailor's Tale kicks serious ass. I will seek out the Earthbound version. That guitar sound that dominates early is so distinctive and SOOOO cool. You know...where it sounds like they're shaking a piece of sheet metal? Distinctive yes...but it also calls to mind the early moments of Great Deceiver, just as the vocals begin. My only problem with Sailor's Tale is that I want it to last longer.

Speaking of cacaphonies...I think you mentioned Starless & Bible Black on your list...perhaps in the "just missed" category. I seriously go back and forth with this one. If I liked it one time, then the next time I find it pointless. And vice versa. I am amused when people liken this work to Fracture...they really could not be more different. S&BB is very clearly improvised, to both good and bad effect. Fracture is a freaking Swiss watch...every second of this was meticulously designed. I know it was originally recorded live, but I refuse to believe there was much improvising going on (outside the single yelp that occurs around the 9 minute mark). I mentioned in an earlier post that it would be bad if every song was designed like Fracture...along with taxing many listeners' patience, this kind of mathematical precision would destroy popular music as we know it. But I'm sure glad it was done once. Starless may be Crimson's greatest song, but I believe Fracture is Fripp's greatest personal acheivement.

Wow, that discussion of S&BB veered off...maybe I'll try again after I listen to it. It's been a while....

It's great to see somebody appreciate The Devil's Triangle, Ray. For years I thought it was just a cacaphonic mess. As the years have gone by, however, I've come to appreciate it as another amazing Crimson song. I don't rate it as highly as you do (as you can obviously see by its absence on my list), but I don't dismiss it as summarily as many other fans do.

It would appear we are pretty close to being on the same page re: Sailor's Tale, which is another KC song I feel is grossly underloved (and would probably rank a little more highly for me than I have it on my list on most days.) Despite the sonic nightmare that is Earthbound, I think Fripp's guitar solo on that live version is other-worldly.

I'm up for a personal final list, as well. I have my top five already in mind; after that, I'll struggle to assign numbers with so many beloved songs, but I'm up to the challenge.

Ah, that Yes game is a labor of love. I think we're finally making some progress there (at least I hope so.)

I thought about pasting the final list here to save you the trouble, ML. But decided that you had earned that honor. Phew, I feel like we really pushed the boulder up the hill. I can't imagine how you guys do it with a more contentious top few songs. My head hurts whenever I check out your adventures in the Yes game.

Anyway, it's been fun revisiting a lot of the tunes I haven't heard in a long time. It's been years since I've gone through an intense Crimson phase. I'd still like to make some kind of a personal list of favorites. Let us know how many songs you'd like us to include, ML...10, 15, 20?
