There have been quite a few games about best albums or best songs, but I don't recall any games about the best side on vinyl. I guess we have all experienced great sides on vinyl where the album as a whole was not great. Also, I'm sure there are great albums, where each side is perhaps outshone by a side from a lesser album. So, the best side on vinyl may differ from what may be the best album.

It could be fun to find out what is considered the best side on vinyl among the users on this forum.

The albums considered must be released in the period 1965 - 1980. Only official studio albums are allowed and no compilations. If an album, like Tubular Bells, only contains one composition, one can still choose side 1 or side 2 of that album. In cases where UK and US releases differ, the UK release is used.

From now on and until Saturday at midnight Amazon time there will be a nomination process. Each participant can nominate ONE side from each band or artist of their own choosing.

The rules of voting are inspired by the recent Dylan game and will be as follows. There will be three positive votes given to three different candidates. The first twenty candidates to reach 10 points will move on to a final round.

Spiritual Architect: I actually flipped a coin when choosing a side for Ziggy. If It Ain't Easy was replaced on side 1 by Rock'n Roll Suicide the choice would have easy. As for Relayer, I have a weakness for Sound Chaser.

Music Lover: I didn't put a limit on the number of nominations. I'll put them all in. Cool you nominated Boston. I would have put it in but forgot about it.

This was actually kind of a difficult list to compile for me. My first exposure to many of these albums was the cassette version and the track listings were sometimes different than the vinyl version.

i thought we were limited to the years 65-80. if so U2 and Ozzy can't be used. and I thought the OP said no live records so live At Leeds can;t be in either. if I got that wrong, please ignore

Both Boy (great choice!) and Blizzard were released in 1980.

Okay, it says "only official studio albums." In that case should Rust Never Sleeps be allowed? It is new material but it was mostly recorded live. It's a slippery slope, and at any rate I would assume not every thing people are going to nominate will get used. Otherwise it will be one of those eternal games that never ends.

I allowed myself ten sides to nominate:

Pretenders - s/t - Side 1 (Precious...The Wait)
Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti - Side 3 (In the Light...Ten Years Gone)
Rush - 2112 - Side 1 (2112)
The Who - Quadrophenia - Side 1 (I Am the Sea...The Punk Meets the Godfather) over Side 4
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run - Side 2 (Born to Run...Jungleland) over Side 1 (She's The One > 10th Avenue); actually consider Side 2 of The Wild The Innocent (Incident on 57th Street...NYC Serenade) his best side but nobody will vote for that
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound - Side 1 (Dancing With the Moonlit Knight...More Fool Me)
Steely Dan - Katy Lied - Side 1 (Black Friday...Doctor Wu)
Patti Smith - Easter - Side 1 (Till Victory...Rock N Roll N'r; yeah I know nobody's going to vote for this but it still blows me away)
Moody Blues - To Our Children's Children's Children - Side 1 (Higher and Higher...Out and In)
Pink Floyd - Meddle (Echoes)

@Lauren >> Great nominations of The Pretenders and Meddle. I remember the first time I heard The Pretenders, after reading a review about them in Stereo Review. I couldn't believe the energy! I walked two miles to my (now late) friend's house, just to share, and he bought it the next day. First time I heard Echoes was on WPLR in New Haven, CT. They would play entire albums late at night. It was so much better than most of the first side. God, I LOVED Album Oriented Rock FM radio in the 70s.

BrownFingerDavis: I have ignored Live at Leeds, although it's a monster album. Feel free to add another Who album if you wish.

I didn't realise Rust Never Sleeps was regarded as a live album, but obviously it is. I have replaced it with Harvest side 2.

@Michael I've never heard of Rust Never Sleeps being considered a live album, but it is an odd bird - an album of new songs partially recorded live but produced in such a way to suggest a studio recording. Meanwhile, Live Rust was a wholly live follow up. I would place Rust Never Sleeps as a studio recording due to the way it was produced and consider it a worthy addition and possibly Neil's best.

Lauren: I'll stick with Harvest although Rust is my favorite. The acoustic side is out of this world.

I'll nominate ELP - Brain Salad Surgery side 1 (Jerusalem ... Karne Evil 9 part 1) as well.
