spottymuldoon :>"Your wild card song choice must come from one of the 9 albums - no bootlegs/alternate takes/live versions..."<

Ah, so no 'Songs for Bonnie (Minnesota Tape)' for example? That's disappointing, as I would have loved to add "I Was Young When I Left Home / Nine Hundred Miles," which I believe is the finest of his arrangements of traditional songs.
Well, maybe ''Girl from the North Country'' will get another shot. That's one he wrote for Bonnie Beecher (I'm sure I'm not telling you all anything you don't know already; Ms. Beecher being best known by non-Dylanites for performing in the Twilight Zone "Come Wander with Me" with Bing Crosby's son).

As an aside, I again read the Coen's script for their new folk scene movie 'Inside Llewyn Davis' this week, and I haven't been able to get "Dink's Song/Faretheewell" out of my head for the last couple days. I think I've heard about every recorded version of that. Dylan or Van Ronk, who's is best? Hard to say.

Lew,

"When I Paint My Masterpiece" was a single. Quite a few songs on greatest hits II were previously unreleased, but I think that's the only one that was a single (by Dylan)

BTW, that was the first Dylan album I owned

Hey, do the wild cards even have to be songs?

I read this for my junior high speech class, I think I was all of 13 years old, maybe 12:

Good point, Captain. There were lots of non-album singles throughout the 60s - my favorite Beatles track of all time, "Rain", was never on an album. I'd hate to overlook some great Dylan tracks because the recording practices of the time didn't match up well with our current tendency to think in terms of albums. Of course, we would have to be sure that the songs in question were released during the 60s if we decided to include them.

I Shall Be Free hasn't a chance. I love that line "You wanna choke me with your scarf. When my name's brought up, it makes you wanna barf.."

Anyone remember the song Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window? It was a single released in 1966 around the release of Blonde On Blonde. Not sure if it's on Greatest Hits Volume 2 but it's sure not on Blonde.

Capt. O,

When I said 'the only one', I meant from the same time period as the albums that are in play here.

Was "Masterpiece" before or after "Nashville Skyline"?

Nice call.

Before I do one of these myself, I always look up the discography to try and flesh out stuff like this.
