In addition to my other ramblings regarding Zeppelin's live releases, I've really been enamored with Bonzo's drum solos on "The Song Remains The Same" and "How The West Was Won". The former clocks in around 12 minutes, the latter at around 20! Yep, I've listened all the way through...:)

Again, I'm most familiar with the version from the film "The Song Remains The Same", so I have a longer attachment to that one. Yet his version of "Moby Dick" on "How The West Was Won" is just...wow!

Listening to both reminds me why he is my favorite drummer of all-time.

Assuming you've made it all the way through them, which version (from these releases) do you prefer?

A. The Song Remains The Same 1976
B. The Song Remains The Same 2007 re-release
C. How The West Was Won

Herman Melville ;0)

Seriously though, I'm not sure - may check back later but I generally don't really get into live Zeppelin like I do the studio stuff.

I can't even make it through the studio version of this song. How long are the live versions?

i'm with you 100%.

how the west was won was very chaotic (which for the most part is a good thing...) but the song remains the same had a beat to it, and he pounded around that beat. more complex, and just better imo. but either way, it's a better drum solo than anyone else has ever done in the history of all history.

Montrose-Springsteen is #2 as in I gotta dump a Springsteen.

Jeff-The best Moby Dick was the one I used to make on cassette. I would just record the starting and ending guitar parts. Drum solos are just for bathroom/refreshment breaks for fans and bands.

Yeah Viva, I've read those stories too. At parties Max was told to go sit in the corner while real drummers like Paice and others hung out. And my sources tell me that Max felt so out of place with these guys...to make him feel better they let him wipe snot from the noses of drummers he idolized. That's about as close as he'll get.

Oh yeah Mcnary was right there for the # 2 joke. But for the encore, after dumping a Springsteen....I *swear* the toilet flushing sounds better than Born to run...or Born in the USA or Tenth avenue Freeze out or.....pretty much any BS song.

Sounds like you need to start a "Lousy band, lousy singer thread". Or you could just cut to the chase and do a "Springsteen SUCKS" thread to go along with all the ones about the Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks, etc.
