Sorry to hear of the death of Pernell Roberts, Adam Cartwright, on The Ponderosa. "Adam" was always my favourite on the show.

DB Edwards says:
Pernells' biggest career mistake was leaving BONANZA early on. I don't think he ever regained the popularity he earned as Adam Cartwright.

There is at least one living "Cartwright". Actor Mitch Vogel played Jamie Hunter (later Jamie Cartwright), the adopted son of Ben Cartwright.

You say Pernell Roberts left Bonanza 'early on' - he did do SIX seasons.... !!

that's far more than most TV shows ever get isn't it ?

Pernell thought the scripts would be stronger and deeper - they often gave him best stories such as 'The Crucible', 'The Hanging Posse', 'The Phillip Deutcheimer Story' etc, plus a string of gorgeous women as love interests for Adam Cartwright - and 'wrote him out' of many of the 'lighter' (or frankly sillier) tales that Hoss & Little Joe did with jokey con men, doubles, leprachauns, etc,

Pernell felt the show got a bit too soapish too - he loathed as a mature man Adam forever calling Ben 'Pa' when Lorne Greene was only seven years older than him !

The guy was genuinely unhappy in the show - we should understand and respect his feelings rather than just berate him for not sticking with a job he clearly deeply disliked - they held him to his lengthy contract - thus he duly responded by 'walking through' the role with very little interest or effort, but that backfired on him as it only made Adam Cartwright the 'coolest' most 'laid back' cowboy on TV & gave his character great charisma !

Bonanza had a HOLE blasted in it when Pernell Roberts quit - yes his career struggled for several years (ironic he ended up having to guest in TV Westerns such as: The Virginian, The Big Valley, Alias Simtih & Jones, The Men From Shiloh, Lancer, etc.....plus cop & spy shows such as Ironside, Mission:Impossible etc..), but minus Adam Bonanza just wasn't the same

Candy (David Canary) later came in & boosted it, but many 'soapish' scripts & jokier episodes proved Pernell had a valid point, despite plenty of later stronger stories too as the show in fact peaked in popularity after Pernell left (tho' most fans prefer the first six seasons with him).

Sadly the shock death of dear old Dan Blocker in 1971 really killed it - the final season 14 was actually pretty good story wise, Candy returned & the new guy Griff (Tim Mathieson) wasn't a bad character joining Ben, Joe, & a by then teenage Jamie - but minus both Hoss & Adam the show had been fatally holed beneath the waterline and just wasn't the same....a pity !

In retrospect maybe had they taken a 'respectful' series break...then brought it back later on minus Hoss it might have worked better...?

Reply to DB Edwards:
Roberts starred for 7 years on Trapper John, M.D.
Not bad for regaining your popularity.
