Earlier I started a thread entitled "Best Classical Releases of 2012." I would like to suggest separating "new releases" from reissues of older works. We all are conscious of the way often excellent works seems to go out of print and become nearly impossible to find. So it might be helpful to have a place to highlight word about various excellent REISSUES. Let me start off with a few of mine, the first I now own and two others which are on my wishlist:

Pierre Boulez: Boulez conducts Debussy and Ravel (6 CDs) (Deutsche Grammophon): Released May 8, 2012. (Boulez Conducts Debussy & Ravel)
Pierre Boulez: Boulez conducts Stravinsky (6 CDs) (Deutche Grammophon): Released April 10, 2012. (Boulez Conducts Stravinsky)
Pierre Boulez: Boulez Conducts Bartok (8 CDs) (Deutsche Grammophon): Released April 10, 2012. (Pierre Boulez Conducts Bartok).

WH - I've had that Bartok set from Boulez for at least a couple of years; why has it only now seen the light of day over in the US?

My sole vote goes for EMI - Home of Opera's re-release of Magnard's Guercoeur. Not because it is the greatest opera ever - it isn't - but because it is the kind of minority interest work that could so easily have languished in their archives forever. Well done, EMI!

Looking forward to a promised September EMI release of Eugen Jochum conducting the Beethoven and Brahms symphonies with the London PO and London SO. Both are among the best cycles ever recorded, but I have had to rely on my old LPs for the Beethoven, and really want them in crackle-free sound.

That's great news, at long last!! I hope they're remastered, & that it's done well--especially Jochum's magnificent LSO recording of Beethoven's 9th, which is one of my desert island Beethoven discs. (EMI's remastering of this recording was poorly done when it was first released on CD.)

I hope they will next release Jochum's Beethoven Missa Solemnis, recorded with the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam for Phillips, which likewise has been too long out of print.

Lets not forget the box we all bought for next to nothing and which turned out to be just about great:
Dvorak: Symphonic Works

I can't believe this box is selling for 15 dollars - for me personally it was perfect, because I didn't have any of the chamber and solo Nielsen:

Nielsen: The Masterworks - Chamber & Instrumental Works, Vol. 2

Unfortunately, Rasmus, that Nielsen box is a lot more expensive in the UK. However, I have recently been a bit more daring and have ordered from the USA a few times, so I might go for this one. I did have some "adventures" with the Neumann Dvorak set - eventually it arrived from America for less than £10, and is fantastic at that or indeed any, price.

Cute and Cuddly

Be cautious when ordering from the US - there are some nasty rules about VAT and customs - check the rules unless you want some nasty surprices from your otherwise friendly postman.

So far nothing unpleasant has happened.....saying that, no doubt is tempting fate, though....

Decca just reissued the 1992 Argo recording of Messiah with Cleobury and the King's College Choir. I'm pleased that Decca is giving this recording a second chance.

Some of these may be 2011, but are worth posting anyway

Celibidache 2: Bruckner
Andreas Staier Edition
Freiburger Barockorchester Edition
Mahler: Symphonies 2, 4, 7, 9; Lieder
Erich Leinsdorf Conducts Prokofiev
Bruno Walter Conducts Mahler
Bruno Walter Conducts Mozart
Brahms: Complete Symphonies and Concertos - Haitink
Collectors Edition: Beethoven Complete Piano Sonatas - Arrau
Collectors Edition: Messiaen: Orchestral Works
Dvorak: Symphonic Works - Neumann

The Leinsdorf / Prokofiev has sound quality problems as reported by reviewers, but Leinsdorf had something special with the composer.
