The great German soprano Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976) (here as the Marschallin) in "Hab mir's gelobt" (Trio) from Act 3 of Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier. She sang with Eva Hadrabova (Octavian) and Elisabeth Schumann (Sophie). This comes from a live performance at the Vienna State Opera on 22 April 1936, conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch.

Oh my, John, did you hear this on record or did you actually see the live performance? Rysanek, Ludwig, King, Berry, are legendary singers from the great Frau ensembles of the past. Their names in a Frau performance cast can guarantee its success.

(Speaking of which, if everybody's interested, there are more highlights from this zarzuela available on my channel. This particular highlight is one of my favorite moments in all the zarzuelas I've listened to. 4 legendary singers from the great Argenta ensemble at their most inspired: Lorengar, Munguia, Campo and Ausensi. If you don't mind, may I ask if you attended any live performances at the Met during the glory days which ended with Bing's retirement in the late 60s or early 70s?

For some reason, that cast sounds familiar. I think there's a recording by the same singers and conductor.

Darren - Thanks for the delineation, between "dames" and "maidens", as Brunnhilde! Ms. Lawrence was wonderful, in her recordings ... but the ladies .... Lotte Lehmann, Flagstad, Eide Norena, Frida Leider and others, deserve some mention, also. Piso mentioned Felia Litvinne, and we can find other examples of how a soprano can express the "Brunnhilde" role, in other/older transcriptions. The Brunnhilde role was one of the essential parts of the Wagnerian conception of how opera could develop, using the mainstays (soprano, tenor, bass and/or baritone) in the Germanic tradition ... such as it WAS ... before the 20th Century and it's composers (of any nation). Opinions only, of course, and thanks for your thoughts/opinions ... and those of the others!!

Thanks, John R! Yes, this is the YOUNGer Luciano Pav, in his developmental stages, IMO. He was one of the GREAT talents of the post-WW2 generation. Maybe his talent would devolve, into mannerisms and etc., in his later years ... but the CORE of the man's singing, was recognizable, in almost ANY recording of the latter parts of his career. No need to comment on the other parts of your, youtube excerpt - Ms. Rysanek, Christa Ludwig, Walter Berry and the fine conductor - Karl Bohm - are fine (in Die Frau ...). Thanks again, for the excerpts!!

Chicago Folks Operetta's production of Emmerich Kalman's "Circus Princess" got a partly favorable review from "Chicago Tribune" critic John von Rhein in today's paper, the first time it's been staged anywhere in the U.S. since the premiere iin 1926-27, 85 years ago. Kalman's daughter Yvonne was indeed there. Von Rhein said the singers need more coaching in both89 style and voice, but was encouraging.

The run alternates with Kunneke's "The Cousin From Nowhere" *"Der Vetter aus Dingsda" playing in repertory at the intimate Choin Theater in Chicago.

Re music-lovers in Japan, a friend who lives there says Japanese record stores are still like supermarkets, and there are eight symphony orchestras in Tokyo, although two are merging.

Greindl could always be counted upon to turn in a strong, if sometimes wild and wooly performance. In the otherwise dreadfully-cast wartime "Meistersinger" under Furtwangler, for example, he stands head and shoulders above all the other singers as Pogner. In my personal mental filing cabinet, however, I have him classified as "opera's resident and supreme caveman," so it's always a pleasure (and a bit of a surprise) to stumble over him in an elegant context.

John, many thanks for that 1938 COMPLETE recording of Cavalleria---I've just listened to parts of it and I think Mascagni's tempos might be a bit more lively than they would be in his studio recording of 1940. Interesting that Lina Bruna Rasa is Santuzza in both. Antonio Melandri is new to me.

The comment in the Youtube listing (by "saltburner2") is quite informative---apparently this 1938 live performance was recorded on film.

The Philips/Miller system, which the BBC and other broadcasters had in the late 30s, used a film coated with gelatine into which a splayed v-shaped cutting-head moved up and down [like the old hill-and-dale method employed by Edison]. The deeper it cut, the more opaque material was removed, and thus more light passed through, giving something for a photo-electric sensor on the other side to convert into an electric current. This was before magnetic tape had been developed [in Germany during the War] to be good enough to make quality recordings. There is a fascinating piece online about the development of these early fore-runners of the tape recorder. This link takes you to the Philips/Miller system, but there are others [Blattnerphone, Marconi-Stille etc] you can find from this one:


The Beecham/Tauber Bartered Bride from May 1939 was recorded on the P/M machine, and Beecham took the tape to the USA in 1941 to have it transferred onto lacquers - which is why it has survived.
The June 1939 Beecham Don Giovanni, with Pinza, Rethberg, Tauber, Konetzni, Favero et. al was recorded on the same machine, and the tape was sent to Australia where it was broadcast by the ABC in 1940. Sadly, these P/M film tapes were fragile, and the DonG appears not to have survived.

Greindl gets a bad rap because a lot of his most available recordings are Wagnerian. He was (from what I have read) a great actor, but the voice really spread under the pressure of singing over that Wagnerian orchestra, even with Bayreuth's covered pit. Vocally, he is far better in Lieder. In addition to the aforementioned Winterreise, his recordings of Loewe are nearly definitive Josef Greindl singt Carl Loewe Balladen.
