Who can really do Johnny Blaze justice becasue as much as I like Nick Cage he's not the right fit especially after seeing Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

I don't know when Nick Cage will stop getting action roles for 25 year old men. He's like 50 isn't he?

Nicos says:
Method Man obviously.

Personally I don't think Nicolas Cage is a bad choice. I think most of the problem lies with how awful the scipts were for the two movies. They need to get a writer who knows how to play to Cage's strengths and just let him go full on crazy pants for the role. Also, I think a major issue is that in both movies they tried to make Johnny Blaze too much of a hero. They need to go the Hobo With a Shotgun route and make Ghost Rider sort of a good guy, but clearly dangerous and unhinged and crazy (who wouldn't be after having your soul replaced with a demon that likes to burn up people's souls?). Alternatively, not use him as the main character and use him as part of a group in the future.

I dont know wasn't letting him go crazy part of what was wrong with the second one?

A Midnight Sons movie could be awesome. I kind of think you'd have to do a Dr. Strange solo movie 1st though.

FallenMarvel says:
I think they made him a bit too crazy in that movie. That was a major issue. Not to mention because of the director it was pretty much like the Crank movies with Ghost Rider. A Midnight Sons movie would be pretty awesome I think. I think it's time for Marvel to buy the Ghost Rider rights back.

I finally got around to the 2nd movie. Made me miss the 1st one which I wasn't much of a fan of. This character seriously needs to be done better.

Maybe they should look up the guy that did Blade?

J. Case says:
Do you mean the guy that directed Blade?

In reply to an earlier post on Jul 30, 2012 7:57:38 AM PDT
FallenMarvel says:
Must be. Ghost Rider needs to have a much darker tone. I mean he is a dark character and he needs to be fully portrayed as such.

I think Vigo Mortenson would be able to pull off just the right feel for Johnny. Rugged, badass, virtuous, while at the same time being unhinged, dangerous, and borderline psychotic.

I like Vigo, but I'm thinking he's too old also. He was in his 40's when he did Lord of the Rings. Johnny is supposed to be in his 20's right?

I dunno what his official age is supposed to be. I thought during the "Spiritis of Vengeance" arc (? I forget what it is called, basically where Centurious frees Zarathos and they go into the medallion of power and junk like that) I thought Johnny was in his 40's.

Anyway, they could totally do a movie with Vigo. He would be the older Johnny Blaze demonic Ghost Rider and he could be dealing with the emergence of the Dan Ketch Angel of Vengeance blue-flamed Ghost Rider. Or something.

Well as far as age goes, from what I've seen throughout the various comic incarnations, he's never truly freed from the spirit. So, that being the case as long as he's not super ancient, I feel like you could go for just about any age and have it work. I personally just like the middle aged approach because by then he's truly begun to slide, and he's no longer a fresh face, but an aged, ravaged hardcase.

I think the biggest problem the films face overall though, is a basic lack of faith from the studios. They don't want to take a big chance on the character, because for the most part people don't "get" it. I would like to see an edgy, hardcore, and even frightening GR movie. Something more in the vein of what Garth Ennis did in Road to Damnation and Trail of Tears. Of course for that you'd need the full R rating, and I don't see that happening any time soon.

CGI makes special effects a lot cheaper these days, or at least a lot easier to pull off, so it would be cool to make it more of an indy film with some really good unknown actors and an artistic approach like you'd see out of Focus Features or something...that would be totally unexpected for a comic book movie and they wouldn't have to spend a lot of money on it, and it would be a completely new way to market the franchise.

cgi does hurt on closeups. for sure. nick cage did a fine job i think, johnny blaze was in his 30's. but who cares. 50 isn't too old.

It's not so much an issue for me that Nick Cage played the part. My issue is how he was portrayed. I'm sure a GR movie could turn out well even with Nick Cage playing the role, but I guess what it boils down to is the writing.

The director? The first Blade was directed by Stephen Norrington and that would be a nice choice I think. The second Blade was directed by Guillermo Del Toro. Also an awesome choice I think!

That would sound like an awesome movie to me. It just really needs the right touch of horror. I've read some Ghost Rider issues in the past and it is some pretty creepy stuff. The movies didn't really have that. The only time I kinda felt that was the very first transformation in the first film, but after that......... nothing.

J. Case says:
Did you ever read when Ghost Rider had to escape Hell at the start of Ghost Rider Volume 3, and Lucifer was able to fool Ghost Rider?
I think it should be shown scenes of with the human in control then when needed the demon takes over showing how powerful Ghost Rider is.

FallenMarvel says:
Unfortunately, I probably haven't. I've only read a few issues here and there over the last 3 years or so. Mosty during the tie-ins to big events, but it has goaded me to read stand-alone issues.

I am in the same boat. If they ever released a TPB of the storyline where Dan Ketch is trying to recruit an army to take down heaven and Johnny Blaze is trying to get all the other incarnations of the Spirit of Vengeance from other countries together to stop him. That one looked pretty intereseting, but like you, I only got to read it in bits and pieces from skimming them at the gas station (! yes, where I lived they still sold comics at the gas station).
