Hey folks,

So, for years I've been a fan of Descent... a board game reminiscent of Warhammer Quest, and Hero Quest from the days of yore. As of this month, D&D has thrown their hat into the ring with the release of Castle Ravenloft, and in the future they will be releasing the Wrath of Ashardalon.

For those of us who don't have a regular gaming group anymore, and don't really have the time to dedicate weekly to the hobby, but who still have the urge to throw dice, and enjoy some dungeon crawlin', this could be just what the doctor ordered.

I am planning on picking up a copy of CR in a couple of weeks, but wanted to get some feedback from the community. Has anyone out there picked the game up? Is there any real interest? Personally, I kind of love the idea of a collaborative way to play out a fantasy dungeon using D&D rules (even if it is D&D-lite) without a DM. I'd love to hear people's thoughts... if you own the game, what do you think (production value, playability, fun, etc)? If you're interested but don't own, what have you heard? If you're not interested, and you're sure that the game is going to suck, why?

This is definitely a new direction for D&D to go, and I'm really excited to see how it works out.

I pre-ordered it here, but sadly the release date has been pushed back to 8/31. The best discussions I've noticed (including info from Mearls and other designers) are at boardgamegeek.com. I've already been playing board games with my D&D group whenever we gather in a group of four or less, and this looks like a fun addition to include - we may start boardgaming whenever less than a group of six is present.

D&D has a long history of board games, the first DUNGEON! game came out in the late 70s. I have a few versions of it from the early 80s and another from the 90s. It was a fun, D&D primer for kids.

But CR looks to be a much more sophisticated heir in that regard--it really looks like D&D "light". I've not ordered it yet, but I have Wrath on pre-order. I'll wait to see what Ravenloft's reviews are like before I commit. And as Wrath is basically the same game, if the reviews for CR are bad, I can always cancel my pre-order.

So, Esgaldil...

I believe that Castle Ravenloft is out now. Have you (or anyone else here) received it and had a chance to play yet? I'm still curious to hear what people think of the current push for D&D boardgames.

I played it last week (the 19th, so we were all pirate adventurers that day) with my gaming group and we had a blast. It is very much a kind of super simple 4e, and the mechanics are well designed to create the feel of a dungeon crawl without a DM - the nasty surprises don't feel any more arbitrary than the ones in Tomb of Horrors. The monsters have good variety in their behaviour (Gargoyles, for example, will revert to statue form if no one is nearby, making them more like a trap than a monster) and the 4e emphasis on teamwork is definitely present.

I'm not much of a reviewer, so check out these folks for their comments and information, with the caveat that they tend to play hundreds of board games and have their own expectations and standards:
