Yeah, Amazon deleted him again...probably another reason this place kinda died out.

I'm working on my campaign world again. Revamping the religion, tweaking the maps.

Doom says: your world based on any of the older worlds, or pure homebrew?

Posted on Nov 1, 2011 1:37:14 PM PDT
Homebrew, based on Europe, with stuff thrown in from wherever I find it. I named my big Dwarf kingdom "Dazkoom," because it sounds a little like "Khazad Doom."

My Gods are either all twins (haven't decided yet), or each has both a good and an evil side. IOW, the evil God of Slaughter is either the twin of or the other side of the good God of Valor.

Doom says:
Wouldn't Slaughter be the opposite of Peace/Life/Fertility? I'm not sure what the opposite of Valor would be? Thievery/Assassination, maybe? Interesting idea of twinning all the gods though, pretty sure I haven't seen the like before.

Must be rough sitting down to Thanksgiving at the god's table. ;)

Each God pair would still be connected in theme. So Slaughter/Valor, Benevolent Ruler/Tyrant, Healing/Curses, and so on.

Thing is, my good Gods had some development, some character, while my evil Gods were pretty much two-dimensional "ya ya, I'm evil" cardboard types. So I got rid of them, leaving my world with no evil Gods at all. Which makes for a nice world to live in, but boring from an adventuring standpoint. Then I saw a YouTube video that got me thinking along dualistic lines. I'm thinking more two sides than twins, except for one.

Orli, Goddess of Knowledge, recently (a hundred years ago or less) split her good and evil sides, so She actually is now twins, one good and one evil. Neither is a Goddess of Ignorance, but one believes in using knowledge for good and the other for evil. This has shaken up the religion, and rumors persist that the other Gods may soon do the same, or that Ori and Liri may recombine.

Came up with that Tuesday afternoon.

Everybodys heard WotC is working on the "next" D&D right?

Posted on Feb 19, 2012 6:26:24 PM PST
Yeah. Not sure how I feel about that.

Doom says:
Yeah, to avoid the stink of yet another "new edition", I believe WotC's name for is "D&D Next". The worst part is how much WotC trashes 4e--granted, it was the shortest lived edition for good reason, but when WoTC says its own products aren't very good, it doesn't exactly inspire me to trust that their next product will be good.

I'm still a sucker, though, and will likely buy 5e when it comes out. It wouldn't surprise me to see some sort of 'beta' released at Gen Con this year.

Yeah, I probably still buy it too. I really didn't think 4th Ed was all that bad though...

Doom says:
4e does what it does well, at least for levels 1-5. But past that, cracks start getting pretty wide in the system, and much of "old D&D" feel of exploration just didn't translate over to 4e. WotC itself acknowledges 4e's magic treasure system was bad, the "daily" powers were bad, and that high level play doesn't work.

It's still a very playable game, and the first three books (Player's Handbook, DMG, and Monster Manual) are by themselves a great game, good for many hours of play. The other fifty or so hardcover books, at $40 a pop? Not so much. When you toss in that no table plays by the same set of rules (you have the old books, the Essentials variant, the pre-October downloadable rules/character builder, and the $10 month non-downloadable system), and you have a game that totally didn't do what it set out to do: be a set of rules that everyone could play by that would be as fun from first level to thirtieth.

WoTC is re-printing many of the old books (both AD&D and 3e), just to get a feel from that what rules set they should imitate for 5e.
