We purchased a new Vizio 1080p Vizio HD TV. When we hooked up the Toshiba VCR/DVD Combo, only the DVD part works. Vizio told me that it was a combatability problem and that I should go out and purchase a high end VCR/DVD Combo and maybe that should work. Any suggestions?

I'm not familiar with either your player or your television, but I'm wondering whether the VCR -- which is strictly analog -- must be connected via RCA cables, rather than the HDMI/DVI connection, which is digital. It may require you select an alternate 'input' setting on your television: one input for the digital HDMI DVD connection, and a second when viewing VCR tapes via the RCA connection. Check your television user guide as to how to connect and select the RCA inputs for viewing.

R. P. King says:
I have both a Vizio HD tv and the Toshiba DVD/VHS recorder. CG Mercer is correct. You need separate RCA cables for the VHS and it will work. The real problem is that there is no HDMI input to the recorder only an S video connection, so you don't get good HD recording.

C.G.M. says:
Thanks for your confirmation of my suspicions, Mr King.

I'm not surprised at the lack of HDMI input for recording. It's likely we'll never see HD recording in this country, if Hollywood has anything to say about it. They're terror-stricken at the thought of anyone recording films in HD. That's why there is no such thing as a Blu-Ray recorder in the US, as there are in some countries overseas; I understand they're available in Asia (Japan). There's probably some Federal law somewhere that makes it a felony to import one, I wouldn't doubt.

And you've probably noticed that it's getting harder and harder to find DVD recorders and DVD/VCR units at your local retailers, too. You'll generally have to find one online. Now with digital signals are the norm on television, Hollywood is doing it's best to force the broadcast of signals which cannot be recorded on all programming, much as PPV is restricted now. The courts may have given viewers the right to record for personal use, but it also gave broadcasters the right to transmit a signal which cannot be recorded. It wouldn't surprise me to find DVD recorders extinct before too many years. Unfortunately.
