Natalie Baer says:
Reading this novel was difficult at first until I became deep into the character's lives. I tend to have rosy colored glasses, expecting a happy ending, yet when I read the last pages, I knew it couldn't have ended any differently

J. Schissel says:
I found this book fascinating on many levels, and admire the author's ability to switch genres (in a sense) within a series. In this case, she explores completely different characters in very different circumstances whose lives converge unpredictably with her usual cast. The depth of her characters and their attempts to make their way in seemingly hopeless circumstances is touching and realistic. My heart is broken with the death of one of her characters, but she makes me eager to read the next book to see how she explores the impact. A+++

It may not be over. George will tell us what happens to the kid and the blade, ( I hope!)

Joyce says:
I heard the author herself refer to WCBHSH as a "black" (meaning dark) story; I doubt that she will pick up the story again, as it is so disconnected from the other novels, and as we can see in "TBOD" published April 2010, Lynley is also getting beyond Helen's death. However, we have seen again and again that she does unearth characters and re-use them, so my theory may be disproven.
