I recently recommended The Hokey Pokey Man (Anita Arcari) on another thread, a family saga set in Italy & England between late 1800s & mid 1900s, there is a love thread running though the novel but it is really about family disloyalty, betrayal and the way it shapes the life of Tino, the main character, and how is is forced into a situation he thinks he can never escape from. It covers Italian & English political & social history & customs, and covers 2 world wars. It says on the cover it will make you laugh & cry, and it does. It is on Amazon US but for some reason, it says out of print which is nonsense, because I have just bought several copies as gifts for friends and family BUT off the UK site ( It's a really good read, especially if you like the historical aspect, the characters& scenes really come to life. Hope this helps and good luck.

Hi there. There are some others, too, you might like (not sure if they've been mentioned before) - one is called Dear Francesca & the other Dear Olivia. Similar about Italian immigrants to the UK, by a lady called Mary Contini. Really interesting background to her family history but include authentic recipes, too. You're right, I often surf the US site as well as Uk and find it odd that the novel I recommended is showing out of print - it is a fairly new book, released a couple of months ago. Maybe they need an update. I'm guilty of lending my copy to quite a few people and buying some as gifts, but everyone said they couldn't put it down, so I suppose that says something about it. If you get really stuck, let me know a PO address or something for where you live & I'll see what I can do from UK. Best wishes.

Have you read The Leopard? I believe it's the standard of Italian (Sicilian, anyway) family sagas.

Hello, Book Lady,
I'm not sure if my saga FAMILY DECEPTIONS is what you have in mind but here's a brief description:

Pietro and Isabella Rocca are living a marriage of convenience in 1928 Italy. He allows his wife to rule the household, the farm, and their young twins. Isabella thinks she rules Pietro too, until she discovers him in bed with the neighbor's wife. Isabella sends him away, to work in Torino for the year it will take her anger to subside. Instead, he sails to America with hopes of acquiring enough money to buy his family's forgiveness. The new life Pietro builds-one based on gambling, extortion, bootlegging, and bigamy-seduces him to stay. Meanwhile in Italy, Isabella adjusts to life without Pietro, using deceit to safeguard her family and later to aid WWII partisans who eventually regard the son a hero and the daughter a Nazi collaborator. Twenty-nine years will pass before Pietro returns as a wealthy man, along with an American son determined to befriend the family his father deserted. But first Pietro must redeem himself to Isabella, their children, and the neighbor he betrayed.

Hello Loretta, Yes this sounds like a book I would like to read, thanks so much for getting in tough with me I am having a hard time finding Italian writers or books based on Italians and their families so far I have only found Adriana Trigiani, Peter Pezelli and Kathleen Tessaro. I posted a few inquiries on Amazon but have not received that many responses so thank you again. Is your book available in paperback? I will look on Amazon

thanks again

Hi Book Lady. There's 1 copy of The Hokey Pokey Man on Amazon US at the ridiculous cost of $75! An acquaintance of mine who lives in Canada bought 2 copies off the UK site one for herself & one for her Mum) - it cost her around $11 dollars each, including postage to Canada. Crazy! I asked Amazon to update, but they say they have problems with buying from some UK publishers 'en masse'. Suppose a Kindle edition might be the answer, but as others have quoted on different threads,, nothign's quite the same as holding a book in your hands - the feel of the paper, the smell of the ink. My husband bought me a bood reader last Christmas (2009) but I'm afraid downloading just doesn't quite do it for me. Good luck with finding suitable novels, anyway.
