You know what I miss about brick and mortar bookstores? I didn't get approached by every hack with a manuscript.

That is not a kindle single. A "kindle single" is something that is identified and selected by amazon, under their program, which is marketed as follows:

Kindle Singles is here to offer a vast spectrum of reporting, essays, memoirs, narratives, and short stories presented to educate, entertain, excite, and inform. Our writers take you places you can't get to any other way, on journeys of fact and fiction that share these common threads: they're the highest-quality work we can find, and at a length best suited to the ideas they present

A kindle single is marked by amazon as a kindle single, as in this work: The Walk Up Nameless Ridge (Kindle Single). What you are selling isn't something that has been identified by amazon as the "highest-quality work" they can find. It is a short story that you have uploaded for sale. Claiming that it is a "kindle single" is misleading. Sort of like saying that something was "published by amazon" when it was actually uploaded for sale through amazon's platform.

I'm a new author, but as I headed to this forum with my manuscript in hand, ready to ask everyone to read it, I noticed how many responses like yours are in here. Then it made sense to me. Of course new authors are going to come right in here and bug everyone. I don't want to irritate everyone. What is your advice to someone who has a novel they want people to read? I want to start at the beginning.

Go to the MOA, link in angela's post, make sure your profile is updated with your website/author page, and find other avenues to market yourself (facebook, twitter, goodreads, etc). The Amazon forums are not the way to market books.

Thanks! I went to that moa forum. Man, one post after the next of "this is my book" with no regard to the previous post. I didn't even want to add to it. I'll check out this goodreads thing you mentioned and wait for my friends and family's reviews to trickle in.

William, I hope your friends and family are reading to critique your book and not to come to Amazon and leave reviews. Reviews by family and friends are frowned on and frequently criticized. Amazon's TOS states that anyone with a financial interest, and certain family members could be in that group, are not allowed to review the book. Also, reviews by friends and family are almost always favourable whether they should be or not.

You should try to acquaint yourself a little more with what is happening in the self-pub business to prevent yourself from making mistakes that could jeopardize your book's sales.

you're right.
you should read it and give me an honest review.
