Keryl Raist says:
Finite time, almost infinite things to read. Of course they have to compete. But I don't see how they'd be competing by form rather than by quality.

I don't care if it's a short story, novella, novel, or War and Peace the Super Duper Extended Version, if it's a good story with characters that click for me, I'll read it. It's competing against everything else out there for that chunk of my time, and the way it wins that competition is by having a first page or two that attracts my attention and keeps me interested.

I'll agree with the blogger that a novel is not better than a short story, just different.

Well said, Keryl. Literature competes with everything else out there for an audience--movies, cable, internet, sports, etc. Unless you have a time-turner or a TARDIS, there are a finite number of hours in a day.

On the other hand, literature doesn't compete with literature except by genres. One may never pick up romance but read all the SFF they can get their hands on. Readers discriminate, but authors don't compete with authors.
