Yonni Groza says:
There's an old folk song I learned in 4th grade...it starts off:

Orion is arising
You can see the stars are blazing....

I can find the lyrics online but I need to hear the song, desperately! I've tried everything and I've just about lost hope. Has anyone ever heard it??

Yonni, Google "The Mudcat Cafe". It's a site dedicated to folk &
blues music. There's a forum similar to this, you can track down
lyrics, etc. I think it will be a pretty good place to check. Good
luck!

Wow - that's obscure....

According to 'redforkhippie' site it's in the silver-burdett grade six music book - you might search for that and see if you can get a copy, then you would at least have the sheet music.

The same site has an address listed for the composer James Zimmerman and his agent.

Most likely it came out of the Silver Burdett music book series from the late 70's or early 80's edition. I am an elementary school music teacher and used that series of books way back then.

The name of the song is "Orion," but I am not sure if you can get it because my new series of Silver Burdett music books do not have it included. I don't have a copy of the old book from way back.

My suggestion to you is to contact the Silver Burdett Ginn publishing company to see if that song exists somewhere you could get a copy.

The song was one of my absolute favorites also. I can see why you would like to get it. Good luck. Bonnie King

I can sing it, (4th grade too), but don't have all of the lyrics. What do you propose?

It looks like the composer replied below, but I found a link that will also give you all the information you need to know about him and the song - it's actually part of a suire, and though I never heard of it, am now interested in buying it myself.

I'm the composer of the song Orion, and several links do not have accurate lyrics. If you're interested, please contact me directly at jkzim@verizon.net. Thanks.

I've made a recording of Orion Is A-Risin', and it's available on a CD I've made of 10 songs I wrote. The CD is for sale for $15 with the proceeds going to the Nature Conservancy, and you can purchase it by sending check or money order to: Jim Zimmerman, 45 Knollwood Rd., Elmsford, NY 10523. You can also contact me directly at jkzim@verizon.net. Thanks for your love of Orion.

Hi everyone. I am the composer of the song "Orion". If you're interested in an authentic recording of it, I have made one. I'm selling it, along with 9 other songs I wrote, with the proceeds going to the Nature Conservancy, an organization that buys up tracts of land to keep them "wild". If you want to contact me, email jkzim@verizon.net. Thanks. Jim Zimmerman

How awesome to find you responding to this! My first grandbaby is due , well yesterday. His name is Orion. I have been singing the first two lines over and over again for the last 6 months when they chose his name! I learned your song in fourth grade in Toronto , now living in California......would love to know the lyrics again!

Larry Hart says:
Mr. Zimmerman,

I, too, was introduced to this song when I was in 4th grade, I believe. I am 49 years old and could only remember snippets of the song, but it has haunted my brain ever since. I have a son now, age 10, and his name is Liam Orion - named partially for the song that I couldn't remember, but "Sleeping outside in a bag as a kid, seems like the best thing that I ever did," and odd line or two more beyond the opening line(s). I would love a copy of this song to share with my son, who is the age I was when I heard your song for the first time, some 40 years ago. Respectfully,

Larry Hart

Hi Larry --
I am so pleased to hear about your experience with my song, and the naming of your son after it! As for getting a copy of the song, here's my post from last fall:
"Hi everyone. I am the composer of the song "Orion". If you're interested in an authentic recording of it, I have made one. I'm selling it, along with 9 other songs I wrote, with the proceeds going to the Nature Conservancy, an organization that buys up tracts of land to keep them "wild". Also, let me know if you just want a music sheet, which I can send you for $5 with the same idea as for the CD.
Thanks again! Jim Zimmerman

The Stone Ponies w/Linda Ronstadt has a copy of Orion on that cd

In reply to an earlier post on May 4, 2014 11:34:29 AM PDT
The song "Orion" on the Ronstadt/Stone Poneys album is an entirely different song from the one I wrote. Mine was published for many years in a Silver Burdett sixth-grade music book, starting in 1974. The Stone Poneys song was recorded almost 10 years before that.

I still remember your song from Mrs. Chandler's sixth grade music class at Pageland Elementary School in Pageland, SC way back in 1982! Beautiful song!

Thanks, Paul, for tracking "Orion" down, and then letting me know. Much appreciated.
