I was speaking today to Colleen, a Garmin customer relations person and she told me that so long as I can use the usb cable to connect to my computer, which I can, the GPS does not need a wall plug-in cable. Of course, if I am on the road and cannot locate a computer to plug into, I would think the plug-in cable would be necessary. Incidentally, Customer Service at Garmin was very helpful in trouble-shooting my Garmin Nuvi 1490T, so helpful that I spoke to her supervisor to commend her.

If you're using it in the car, you should have no need to charge it by computer. The combined car charger/taffic cable is much faster.

Yes you can charge the unit with your computer via a USB cable. I agree with GnuMonia in that you should never need to do that if using it in the car regularly.
