Gift for boyfriend's dad?

I have met his dad, but don't know him that well. This is the first year I will be spending Christmas with them, so I want to make a good impression. His dad likes to read, cook, but he doesn't really need anything. What are some simple ideas? Would a gift of gourmet snacks or foods be ok, or too non-personal?

Yah, gourmet snacks is a good idea, give the old chap something to aim for.

I think you shouldn't try to impress him with a gift because you don't know him that well. A personal gift based on his tastes would mean more if you knew him well and knew why it was special or it had a story behind it, rather than stabbing at it based on third person information. Maybe get something basic like a nice tie, and impress him with your behavior and conversation. If you're having Christmas dinner with his family, bring the gourmet snacks to that, or a bottle of his favorite wine.
