Aragorn says:

Skin Deep is a safety guide to cosmetics and personal care products brought to you by researchers at the Environmental Working Group.

Skin Deep pairs ingredients in more than 42,000 products against 50 definitive toxicity and regulatory databases, making it the largest integrated data resource of its kind. Why did a small nonprofit take on such a big project? Because the FDA doesn't require companies to test their own products for safety.

Another good resource is a book by the title Consumer's Guide to Cosmetic Ingredients. Your statement also applies to food additives as some have not been thouroughly tested for toxicity yet, but are readily added to our foods. There are chemicals used in our foods to enhance flavor, color or preserve them that the European union does not allow. There are many good reasons why such substances are banned, and bewildering why they remain in use in our country. I have referenced The Consumer's Guide to Food Additives on may occasions. It is not only enlightening, also makes me angry at times. Both titles are by Ruth Winter. If you care about what goes on your skin you'll surely be seeing red over what goes in the mouths of unwitting snackers. What burns me up the most is the most questionable chemicals are found in foods targeted for children.

It's not at all bewildering why poisonous and untested substances are still permitted in our foods, drugs and cosmetics -- often to the exclusion of safe alternatives with hundreds or thousands of years of entirely safe traditional use. As Mark Twain said about a century ago, we have the best government money can buy, and there is no distinctly criminal class in America except Congress.
