I just ask questions until my doctor explains it well enough. Usually he'll send home additional reading as well. That's considered (in America anyway) to be part of the office visit. I've never had an issue with him about it. If I did then I'd move on to another physician.

And, like Tree hugger said, there is google to bone up on the issue before ever going in.

It may be helpful to have a source for medical terminology in order to understand medical reports. But doctors don't base respect for patients on whether they are conversant with medical lingo.
