I won't mention titles so I'm not accused of "pimping" my own work, but I just received a very thoughtful review on one of my novels pointing out that it was really Military Historical Fiction and really should be in that category.

I agree.

Unfortunately, such a category does not exist. Amazon does not have sub-categories within its Historical Fiction category. They have numerous categories within Fantasy and Romance, but Historical Fiction is lacking ANY sub categories and much of the War fiction should go in Historical Fiction. It would be great if readers would let Amazon know they want that. I believe Amazon would listen to readers on the topic more than they do authors.

Thanks.

I agree that these categories should exist, especially as a fan of historical fiction, I would like to narrow down my choices.
While it would be difficult to categorize many books, especially when so many include multiple categories, it would still be worth it in the long run.
So yes, this would be a great thing to petition to Amazon.

Crime, thrillers and mystery has a historical section. That's kind of the other way round.

I agree that the historical fiction should have distinct sub-categories like romance, war, political and the like. Perhaps, we should let Amazon know about it.
Thanks

For HF catagories go to the genre section of www.readersadvice.com There are a zillion...by subject, decade, country, etc., and each book is linked to Amazon so you can see the reviews.

Oh my goodness Jos M. Hohmann! I'm forever grateful for that link! If you click on "Genre Index" it breaks down into every conceivable sub category you could imagine. This is perfect for a picky reader like me who only likes specific types of stories. Thank you!!!

Perhaps if we mentioned to Amazon that even Barnes & Nobles (whose categories I normally find very inadequate) has sub-categories for HF. ;)

Actually, though there are several categories listed under "Romance", Historical Romance is in nearly the same waters as Historical Fiction. There are only two sub-categories of Historical Romance: Regency and Western. That's it. For someone like me who writes medievals, or for someone who writes Victorians, Georgians, or romances set in Ancient (Celtic, Viking, Roman, Greek) cultures etc., there is nothing else.

It's very frustrating.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be for Historical Fiction to have NO sub-categories. I read quite a lot of historical fiction, and I find amazon difficult to navigate, in terms of locating particular eras of historical fiction as well. Thanks to Jos. M. Hohmann for the link to readersadvice.com. I will definitely try that out.
